EZRA G. HAYES A Much Respected Citizen of Elizabethtown Dies at His Home The death of Ezra G. Hayes which occured at Elizabethtown Friday came as a surprise to many of his friends. While his nealth had not been the best, yet his death was not expected 180 o soon. He was born in a little log cabin not a mile from the large palatial home in which he died. His childhood, boyhood and manhood days have been spent in this" small compass, received his early education, married and raised his large family of children. He was a product of Elizabethtown in full, loved and respected by all. After completing his studies in the Elizabethtown school he entered Moores Hill college, later attending Oxford college. He was the son of Moses D. and Mary Jane Guard Hayes, and was born Feb. 9, 1850, coming from the honorable pioneer stock of Hayes and Guards that settled in the "Big Bottoms" about 1796. On Oct. 15, 1874, he was married to Arbella West, by whom he had fourteen children, seven boys and seven girls. One child died in infancy and three others died after they became the parents of three children each. His wife preceded him to the grave two years ago, since which time he has been disconsolate. The avocation of life chosen by him was that of a farmer, and his large home proves that he made a success in the life of his choice. In early life he united with the Methodist church, when the church building stood on the old school ground, some fifty years ago, and continued to be one of its faithful members, being always interested in anything for the betterment of the community. He was also a member of the Elizabethtown Grange, The funeral was held. Monday at the Elizabethtown church, conducted by his pastor, Rev. of Homestead. After, which 'neata autumn leaves he was laid to test in Greendale cemetery. His. departure is, mourned by his five sons, Joseph, Ezra, Jr., Frank and Warren of Elizabethtown, and Charles of Dayton, O; five daughters, Mrs. Stella Collins, Mrs. Hannah Hayes, Mrs. Nannie Nixon, Mrs. Tycie Sykes and Lucy, all who reside in Elizabethtown, together with two brothers, Isaac of Los Angeles, Calif., and Charles F. of Sulphur, Okla., and two sisters, Mrs. Jennie Rittenhause of Cleves, and Mrs. Hattie Becker of Home City, besides a host of, other relatives and firends. In the death of Mr. Hayes the loses one of its most staunch friends. He has been our correspondent from Elizabethtown for years. Our deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved ones.1
