The following obituary appeared in the newspaper The Canadian Statesman published in Bowmanville, Ontario 12 August 1909:
Late Robt. Moment
A Leading Citizen Passed Away
By the death of Robert Moment, which came suddenly on Wednesday evening, July 28th, Orono loses a foremost citizen, one who had been largely identified in every movement in the best interests of our people and village for over a quarter of a century. As Postmaster for about 25 years, Secretary-Treasurer of the Clarke Agricultural Society for a like period, and conducting an extensive conveyancing business he was brought in touch with a great many people from all parts of the country, but his best work, and that for which he had particular fitness was the Sunday School, and to this work he devoted much time and all the energy he could command. About a year ago, owing to failing health, he was compelled to relinquish the work of many years service as Superintendent, and this may be said of him, that he endeared himself greatly to the hearts of the children and young people, many of whom in distance parts will cherish his memory as having inspired them to a better life and drop a sympathetic tear to his memory. He was also Secretary for some years of the Township Sunday School Association.
In the Methodist church he occupied many important official positions in which he served the church faithfully and well. As a local preacher for many years he rendered most valuable service not only in the church at home, but was frequently called to help other circuits at Sunday School anniversaries and other public occasions.
As a Trustee and member of the Official Board he always took a lively interest in all that tended to the success and well being of the church, and supported all her claims with a liberal heart and hand. His death is therefore greatly felt by the local church, and he has left the place vacant which in many respects is hard to fill.
Probably few laymen of the Methodist church had a larger acquaintance with his brethren both ministerial and lay or was more generally respected. The great respect in which he was held was manifested by the large attendance at the funeral, which took place on Saturday the 31st ul. His pastor, Rev. Wm Limbert, conducted the service at the family residence, and the following ministers form a distance took part, viz: John Garbutt (Chairman of the District), T. W. Joliffe, Bowmanville; A. M. Irwin, B.A., B.D., Newcastle, and Charles Adams of Newtonville.
Rev. Mr. Garbutt spoke of the service he had rendered to the church and society at large by his advocacy of the great question of Temperance and Moral Reform, and the pastor spoke of his relation to the local church, and his largehearted and generous disposition.
Mr. Moment was born in 1837, on Lot 16, Con. 4, Clarke, then known as Galbraith farm, and received his education at the sixth line School; his father was Edward Truman Moment, who came to this country fro Hull, Eng., in 1830 and married Mary Gowan, a native of the north of Ireland. For some years Mr. Moment conducted a general store in Orono. In 1868 he was married to Sarah Wightman, daughter of John A. and Janet Renwich (sic) Gairdner.
All of the members of his family were present at the funeral, Mr. Alfred Moment, New York; Rev. John J. Moment and wife, Jersey City, N. J; Mr. Frank Moment and wife, New York, and Misses Melita and Lena at home.
Numerous handsome floral offerings were placed on the casket, among which was a wreath from the Sunday School, and also a wreath from Orono Lodge A. O. U. W. of which deceased was a charter member.
Honorary pall bearers were Messrs. John Rickaby, G. M. Long, Ralph Stutt, Samuel Halliday.
Pall bearers -- A. J. Staples, Thomas Smith, Wm. Armstrong, C. J. Hughson, C. J. Thornton, M.M., J. G. Honey.7
