Orval was born on 15 February 1922 in Juniata, Saskatchewan, Canada, but some other forms give his birthplace as Vanscoy. Juniata was given by his mother on an offical form, so I prefer this location. His paybook initially listed Vanscoy as his birthplace and was then amended.1 He died on 12 October 1944 in Belgium at age 22.3,4,1 He was buried on 17 October 1944 in 7 Rue de la Solitude Cemetery, Putte, Kapellen (municipality), Antwerp, Belgium.1 He was reburied circa 20 January 1947 in Bergen-op-Zoom Canadian War Cemetery, Bergen-op-Zoom, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands.4,1
Canadian Military Service:
Pte Orval Sydney Rousell began military service on 9 December 1942 at the age of 20 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.. He had a grade 8 education (ending in 1938) and was a farmer. He stood 5' 10.5" and weighed 136.25 lbs, with brown eyes and black hair.

His Personnel Selection form contains the following information:
Educational Background
Completed grade eight, attended country school for ten years. Failed grades four and six.

Occupational Background
Farming: Brought up on parents farm, has been employed out for two years, both horse and tractor farming. Has done repairs to farm vehicles.

Other Personal History and Appraisal
Recruit's parents are both living on farm at Juniata, Sask. Father from England Mother from Manitoba. He has nine brothers, of the three youngest there are two at home, one attending school six elder brothers, five farming, one working in packing plant. Also four sisters, one married, two at home, one attending technical school in Saskatoon.

Sports: Hockey, baseball and softball
Music: Likes music but plays no instruments
Social: Attends most social and community functions, mixes freely

Recruit is single 5'10" tall, weighs 140 lbs. Tall medium build clean cut recruit. Well spoken pleasing personality.

Rousell's "M" score indicates average ability. He is especially interested in mechanical work, and would like training in this line. He has already a fair knowledge of internal combustion engines and his training should not be hard for him. Suggest him for trades training as Automotive Tradesman for Infantry (R)

(signed) W. G. Baker, Major.1
On 13 July 1944 he embarked from England for France, arriving the next day.1 He was killed in action on 12 October 1944 in Belgium. After initially being recorded as missing.

Rod Rousell wrote : "On Oct. 12, 1944, my brother Orval lost his life in action over (sic) Holland." This was just after the failed Operation Market Garden which occurred in Sept. 1944. Orval was a Private in the South Saskatchewan Regiment, R.C.I.C.
End of Military Service section.5,1

In the obituary of Amy Wilma Martin who died 14 January 1993, her brother, Orval Rousell was listed as predeceased.6
