Under-Age Buglers Not Taken For Overseas Units
Several Boys Sent Back to Canada; Too Young to Bear The Hardships
Buglers will not be accepted for the Canadian Expeditionary Force who do not come up to the physical requirements of the British military authorities in the same way as ordinary privates do. Half a dozen boys have returned to Canada because they did not measure up to the required standard.
The boys who arrived were Arthur W. Chantry, who went away as bugle boy for the 46th Battalion; Albert Griffiths, who enlisted in a similar capacity for the 53rd Battalion, and A. J. Ford, who went away with the 65th.
In addition another boy, J. F. Bannister, perhaps better known as "Peanuts" Bannister, who went away with one of the earlier contingents as a bugler, also came back, and a boy Ashdown, of Asquith, and another boy Summers of Gledhow, who were with the party, proceeded to their homes in the country.8
