Herbert was born in Winteringham, England, a village on the Humber River, and worked as a farm labourer there until he decided to emigrate in 1909 to New Zealand. He worked in the bush here and had his own team of horses to do the heavy work. Grace met Herbert in the King Country in 1914/15 and they were married in Mokauiti on 29 December 1915. Herbert bought his own 25 acres of land in Te Kuiti in 1929 and lived there until 1954 when he was unable to do the work on the land anymore and he and Grace moved to Avondale, Auckland. He died in hospital at Epsom, Auckland on 29 May 1964.6
