     Pte. Edgar Hobson Carter began military service on 20 October 1916 at the age of 32 at New Zealand. He was single and working as a grocer for his father. On his Attestation (enlistment) papers, he listed his next-of-kin as his parents, Christopher Carter and Matilda Ann Carter of Devon St., New Plymouth. He was described as being 5' 5" and 122 lbs.
