in 1865, Robert Hume and Mary Anne Kingsbury were married, and they had two sons, Adam and Edward, and three daughters Jane, Alice and Agnes.

In 1882, a group of men from Guelph came west to seek homesteads. This group consisted of...Robert Hume...The rest of the party (including Robert) eventually went back to Ontario for the winter...Robert Hume declared he would never come west again, but the next spring found him returning to his homestead...He came back several different years...

In 1892 ,a depression struck Ontario. Robert Hume did not intend to move his family West, but by the spring of 1893, he was moving his family to his homestead...

Henry and Alice (Hume) Reed left their farm in 1920, and moved to New Westminster, British Columbia. Grandfather (Robert) Hume left the farm then also and went with them. He made several trips back to visit his family. He passed away in July, 1929 in his eighty-sixth year.14

Arrival of the Hermione From London
     The ship Hermione was signalled early yesterday morning, but owing to the prevalence of unfavourable weather, she dropped anchor off Rangitoto Reef during the afternoon, and came up the harbour to-day. Her passage has occupied 95 days from London and 84 days from the Channel. Captain Roberts, who again arrives in command of the Hermione, reported having left East India Docks on July 11, and towed to Gravesend. Left Gravesend on the 12th, and the Downs at 6 a.m. on the 11th. Was In company with the ship Pleione off Beechy Head at noon on the 16th, and on the 19th had the ships Pleione and Hurunui in company off Eddystone. On the 20th cleared the Channel, with wind fresh from N.W. by W. Passed Madeira on July 28th, after which the N.E. trades were picked up and carried to 13deg. 15min. N., 25 W., on August 5th. Crossed tho Equator on August 11th in 17 deg. 41 W., and had good S.F. trades to 20deg. S. The meridian of Greenwich was passed on Sept. 3. after which strong westerly winds prevailed till the 1 th (sic). Tasmania was passed on October 5th, and Three Kings sighted on the 11th inst. Passed Capo Brett at 2 a.m. next day, and was three miles off Tiritiri on Saturday last. Head-reaching under storm canvas until daylight esterday (sic). Received pilot at 2.20 p.m., and anchored hi Rangitoto Channel at 5.25 p.m. on the same day. The Hermione brings a large cargo, a list of which appeared in our issue of Friday evening, and the following passengers: - Saloon : Frank Matson and Jolde Brown. Second cabin: Christopher Carter, Matilda Carter….12

     Edward Verl Hume was born on the family farm on 29 September 1910 at Saskatchewan, Canada.6,5 The cause of his death was given as being struck by lightning while driving his tractor. Elmer and Janet found him a day or two later, hanging backwards over the tractor seat. A neighbour had heard the tractor running but had not investigated.7
     Edward Verl Hume died circa 7 July 1947, on his farm near Auburnton, at Saskatchewan, Canada.5,7,8
     He was commonly known as Verle.9 He was a pallbearer at the burial of his aunt,Agnes Cunningham, on 3 March 1939 at Dalesboro Cemetery, Saskatchewan, Canada.10

Lightning kills farmer
WEYBURN, July 10 ( Staff Special).---Weyburn R.C.M.P. Thursday reported finding the body of Edward Verl Hume, 36-year-old Auburnton bachelor farmer which lay out in a field for three days, after being struck by lightning during an electrical storm on July 3. Discovery of the body, according to Weyburn R.C.M.P., was made on July 6.

Carlyle R.C.M.P., investigating, reported Mr. Hume had been struck by a bolt of lightning while working his land with a steel-lugged tractor. The body was found with the stalled tractor &. the summit of a hill.

Dr. G. Boyd, Carlyle coroner said no inquest would be held.

It is believed Mr. Hume has relatives in the Carlyle district but no further details were available.

Auburnton is about 17 miles south of Manor and about 28 miles southeast of Carlyle.8

They were residents of New Plymouth, New Zealand. Beatrice was described as 5' 2" with a medium complexion, brown hair and hazel eyes, and Tracey as 5' 4" with a fair compexion, brown hair and blue eyes..
