Lt. William Eric Lockhart died on 12 June 1917, France at age 24 just one day after becoming a Flying Officer.
His service file notes:
Reported from G.H.Q. KILLED IN ACTION:-12-6-17
It has been now ascertained that this officer was brought into No. 39 Stationery Hospital
Later Diagnosis: "DEAD, MULTIPLE WOUNDS."
I (Rick Moffat) speculate that his role as observer was related to his experience in the Signal Corps.1,5,4
William Eric Lockhart was buried at Aire Communal Cemetery, Pas de Calais France.6,5
Pte. Spr. William Eric Lockhart began military service on 21 January 1915 at the age of 21 years, 10 months and 13 days at Ottawa, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada. One form in his service file notes that he enlisted Nov 12, 1914. His medical examination occurred in Ottawa in Dec. 1914, joining the 2nd Divisional Signal Company, No. 184.
He arrived in the United Kingdom on May 24, 1915 on the S.S. Megantic. He embarked for France September 14, 1915.
Eric was in hospital a couple of times and was invalided to England Dec. 15, 1915 where he joined (taken on strength) the Canadian Engineers (C.E.) Training Depot..1,8,9
On 20 May 1916, at Shorncliffe Army Camp, Kent, England, he was promoted to sergeant, having risen through the ranks of Lance Corporal (Dec 15, 1915 in one record and Mar. 2, 1916 in another), 2nd Corporal (Apr 19, 1916) and Corporal (May 5, 1916.)1
On between 13 November 1916 and 18 May 1917, at Crowborough Camp, Sussex, England, he was cycled "On Command" and "Off Command" but I'm not sure what that entailed.
By Mar 19, 1917 he had been appointed a Provisional Lieutenant, and on May 18, 1917 he was appointed Temporary Lieutenant.
Finally, he was transferred to the Royal Flying Corp (R.F.C.) on April 15, 1917, and he was seconded for duty with the R.F.C on June 11, 1917. He was "To be Flying Officer, (Observer)" with seniority from June 4, 1917.
In another document in his service file, it reports that he had been posted to France as a reinforcement to the R.F.C. on June 3, and attached to the 100 Squadron on June 4, 1917.1

MARRIED THOUGH ILL.
Wedding Was Proceeded With, Though It Was Feared It Would To Be Postponed. The marriage took place yesterday afternoon of Mr. Neil W. Renwick to Miss Myrtle McVeigh. The groom is a former Ottawan but now resides in Winnipeg. He arrived in the city a few days ago but most unfortunately was taken ill and was confined to bed at his hotel. For a time typhoid fever was threatened and it was feared that the wedding, which had been announced for ten o'clock yesterday would have to be postponed. Mr. Renwick, however, was considerably improved yesterday and it was decided to proceed with the ceremony. He was removed from his hotel to the home of the bride. Osgoode street, where Rev. J. T. Pitcher, pastor of Eastern Methodist church, tied the nuptial knot in the presence of immediate relatives. Mr. Renwick was up throughout the ceremony, Which was curtailed as wedding much as possible.
The wedding presents received were numerous and beautiful, showing the popularity of both the young people. Among them was a handsome silver candelabra from the choir and orchestra of Eastern Methodist church.
It is expected that Mr. Renwick, though considerably better than he was, will be confined to his bed for a couple of days yet and so it may be some little time before he and his bride leave for their western home.6
