     2012 Research notes:
Based upon data in Agnes' obituary and article, there are problems with this family. There are too many children. It only shows 2 boys and 3 girls in their family.

For example, only one nephew named Walter Maitland is mentioned. He was probably the son of Jean's sister Sarah. So the Walter in this family may be a symptom of the problem.17

Census Data

Henry Maitland and Henry Maitland appeared on the 1851 Canadian Census of Durham County, enumerated 12 January 1852, enumerated as a laborer. Their children George, Mary, Sarah, Henry and Isabelle were listed as living with them. It is unclear the relationship of Elisabeth Maitland age 15 who was also included in the household. She may have been a niece of Henry. A later marriage record that may have been for her gives her mother's name as Elizabeth Maitland, and does not list a father's name.7
Henry Maitland and Jane appeared on the 1861 Canadian Census of Brighton Twp., Northumberland County, Ontario, enumerated 14 January 1861. Henry was enumerated as a seaman. Their children Sarah, Henry, Isabella, James, Flora, Walter and George were listed as living with them.6

So the Walter in this family may be a symptom of the problem.18

Census Data

Henry Maitland and Jane Maitland appeared on the 1851 Canadian Census of Durham County, enumerated 12 January 1852, enumerated as a laborer. Their children George, Mary, Sarah, Henry and Isabelle were listed as living with them. It is unclear the relationship of Elisabeth Maitland age 15 who was also included in the household. She may have been a niece of Henry. A later marriage record that may have been for her gives her mother's name as Elizabeth Maitland, and does not list a father's name.6
Henry Maitland and Jane appeared on the 1861 Canadian Census of Brighton Twp., Northumberland County, Ontario, enumerated 14 January 1861. Henry was enumerated as a seaman. Their children Sarah, Henry, Isabella, James, Flora, Walter and George were listed as living with them.5
Henry Maitland and Jane appeared on the 1871 Canadian Census of Northumberland County, Ontario, enumerated 2 April 1871. Henry was enumerated as a sailor. Their children Henry, James N, Flora G, Walter R, Gorge W and John F were listed as living with them.19
