Town loses pillar of business community
Arnprior Chronicle-Guide
By Derek Dunn

For almost every house in town, she knew who built it. She likely was in it. Probably sold it a couple of times over.

Arnprior lost a pillar of the community last week. A pioneer who cleared the way for women in business, Edna Mather - wife and mother, friend and competitor – died on Dec. 10 at the age of 95.

She passed away peacefully in the Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital.

Mather opened her own real estate business in 1958 when few women dared entertain the notion. A year later she added insurance to the business, changing the name to Mather Insurance & Real Estate. Plenty of folks at the time predicted the business wouldn’t last six months.

“She gave a lot of people their start in real estate here in town.” Greg Townley
It is heading for 60 years soon.

Greg Townley has worked at Mather’s for 26 years. He said she was often spotted in her famous three-inch heels, mucking about a construction site. She always drove a big car, dressed impeccably, was tough at times, but always fair.

And was a solid judge of character.

“She gave a lot of people their start in real estate here in town,” Townley said. “I will miss being able to call her. I used to call her to ask how to handle this deal or that. She never said, ‘You do this.’ She would always tell you a story about how she dealt with a similar situation.”

He said Edna and her late husband Oris, who died in 1995, made a remarkable partnership.

“He was the nicest person you’d ever meet,” Townley said.

“I tried to pattern myself after her. You know when you are young you watch what the older people did. She earned the trust of everyone. I never once heard anyone say anything negative about her or her business.”

Mayor David Reid remembers as a teenager building five houses in Sandy Hook with his father. They turned to Mather when the time came.

“She sold them quickly. It started a relationship,” Reid said. “She opened doors for a lot of women in Arnprior. She worked hard and looked after her customers.”

Mather is interned at Sand Point Public Cemetery.4
