Eugene Etter Dies in City
Eugene Hugh Etter pioneer Alberta lumberman and partner in the firm of Etter-McDougall Limited, died suddenly Friday in an Edmonton hotel. He was 72.
Mr. Etter first came to Western Canada in the early 1890s and operated sawmills all through the Crow's Nest Pass timber area In southern Alberta. In 1914 he moved to Bickerdike, close to Edson, and carried on with timber and lumbering operations there.
It was in 1920 that the firm Etter-McDougall was formed when Mr. Etter combined with John A. McDougall to form one of the principal lumbering firms in Alberta.
Shortly after the firm was formed sawmills were operated at Dalehurst, Shere and Willow River, B.C. Later company expansion added mills at Winfield and Brule.
HOME AT WINFIELD
Mr. Etter was in Edmonton on a business trip at the time of his death. His home for the last few years has been at Winfield, Alberta.
He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Ivan Bjur at Winfield, one sister, Susan, at Victoria, and seven grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held from Howard and McBride's chapel on Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment will be in the Edmonton cemetery.5
