Augustus Ernest Grogan died on 22 August 1920 at Blackdown House, Haslemere, Surrey, England.1 He was buried on 27 August 1920 at St Peter's Churchyard, Frimley, Surrey, England.3
The following article appeared in the Guildford The Surrey Advertiser, County Times, 25 August 1920 :
SINGULAR FATAL ACCIDENT.
     Boy's Fractured Skull.
Mr. Gilbert H. White held an inquest at the Wesleyan Soldiers' Home, Blackdown, on Monday, on Augustus Ernest Grogan, aged seven, son of Robert Grogan, who resides over the stables at Blackdown House. The father was tidying up the drive on Sunday, and the deceased and his brother aged eight were laying large stones by the sides of the drive. The father had fastened back the gate with a catch, and shortly afterwards heard the gate fall and a scream. He then saw deceased lying face downwards, and the gate, which weighs about 5cwt., on him. He carried the boy, who was bleeding profusely, indoors, and Dr. Jones, Medical Corps, was soon in attendance, but the lad. who sustained a fracture of the base of the skull, was dead on his arrival. It appears that when the father opened the gate it the smooth surface of a piece of drain piper which was lying on the ground, and thus raised the gate. The gate has a ball which goes into a socket of about half-an-inch only in depth, so that when slightly raised, it was resting on the top of the hinges. The deceased, unnoticed by his father, must have touched the gate, which fell on him with the result stated.
The Coroner returned a verdict of death from misadventure, and expressed sympathy with the parents.1
