German Youth Killed at Golden Lake
While Attempting to Cross Ahead of Train
On the last day of October a very sad fatality occurred on a G.T.R. crossing near Golden Lake. A nine -year-old boy, Wesley Schimmens, was struck by the southbound morning G.T.R express, reports the Pembroke Standard. It appears -- and the fact was stated at the inquest by the engineer of the train -- that the boy as well as his younger brother, had for several mornings practiced crossing the track as the train approached, each morning trying to pass a little closer, and on this morning the younger brother got across while Wesley was hit just as he had almost crossed. An examination of his body showed that there were no bones broken but that death was almost instantaneous.
It is quite a common occurrence to see children of any age up to 14 and as young as 4 or 5 years trying this most deadly experiment of crossing the track as closely as possible to an approaching train. In case of an accident no fault can possibly be found with the railway company and it is the duty of the parents to impress upon their children the great danger in such foolhardy play.8
