Grandpa & Grandma Esther Summach saved a postcard of the building that he had mailed on Saturday, April 18, 1908 to Miss Esther Krieger of Palmer Rapids:
"Watch out on Sunday. Coming down to talk to the old folks"

What are the odds he was going to talk about their intentions?
They were both about 18 at the time.

Frederick Summach appeared on the 1911 Canadian Census of Saskatchewan, enumerated 5 June 1911. Frederick was described as a Baptist and a Farmer. As were his older brother, August and their mother Mary.14
Frederick Summach was described as a blacksmith and did custom threshing; and in later years was a farmer. This must have been hard on him due to his asthma. I have heard of him sleeping upright in a chair in order to breath, and can relate to this in my own experience.334

The farm house on Fred's farm was built before 1914 based upon an early picture. It eventually had running water and electricity. The house as I knew it had an enclosed veranda on the east and south sides, but they are not in this early picture, so the veranda was one of several additions made over the years years. In 2002, Fred and Laurene Summach were still living in this house, although it had changed considerably. It finally had to be demolished in (insert date here) due to water damage and the prohibitive cost of bringing it up to modern codes required with any rehabilitation efforts.

Fredrich and Ester Summack (sic) appeared on the 1916 Census of Canadian Prairie Provinces, RM of Loganton, Saskatchewan, enumerated 6 June 1916, described as a farmer and a Baptist. Their son Emmerson was listed as living with them. As were Fred's 2nd cousin, Henry Kuehl and Esther's 1st cousin, Mary Yourt who were included in the household as servants.1138

The Avondale Baptist Church was organized in the home of William and Ida Wellwood on 27 May 1921 in the Avondale district, south of Asquith. He was one of the first deacons of the church. Fred Summach was one of the charter members. He was elected as the first clerk for the new church.40
Frederick and Esther Summach appeared on the 1921 Canadian Census of RM of Loganton, Saskatchewan, enumerated 1 June 1921. Frederick was described as a farmer. Their children Emerson, Muriel, Delbert and Malcholm were listed as living with them. As was Jamieson Stewart who was listed as a servant/labourer (farm). All were listed as Baptist except for Esther who was listed as Methodist.12 Frederick and Esther celebrated their on 13 January 1928.4
The following article appeared in the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Saskatoon Daily Star, 21 January 1928 :
15TH ANNIVERSARY GIVEN BY COUPLE
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Summach of Avondale Receive Gifts From 75 Community Friends
AVONDALE--The community folk of Avondale held a surprise gathering at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Summach on Friday evening to celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of their wedding. Seventeen families were represented, making a total attendance of about 75 persons. The evening was spent in games. August Summach showed his conjuring ability. After the games Mr. and Mrs. Fred Summach were presented by Misses Jean Summach and Marguerite Junop with a basket containing a beautiful cut glass fruit bowl from the community, and a half dozen glass tumblers from the Sandberg family. An address was delivered by Master Harvey Summach, speaking the high esteem of the neighborhood which Mr. and Mrs. Summach had gained. The pair were showered with rice from the hands of Jim Smith. A lunch was served.41

Frederick and Esther Summach appeared on the 1931 Canadian Census of RM of Loganton, Saskatchewan, land location 17 35 09 W3, NE quarter, in the Avondale district, south of Asquith, enumerated 1 June 1931. Frederick was described as a farmer on his own grain farm and a Baptist. Their children Emerson, Muriel, Albert (sic), Malcolm, Olive, Kenneth, Manley, Estella, Shirley and Frederick were listed as living with them. They lived in a wooden house with 7 rooms. It was valued at $1,000. They did not own a radio.
The initial automated indexing of this census split grandpa Fred's family into two, with the first group having a surname of Simmach, and the second group, "Stevens". The AI tool interpreted the "u" with a faint stroke above it as an "i", but I have no idea where "Stevens" came from. The surname below grandpa Fred is indicated by a ditto mark for all of the family.13

Frederick Summach and family attended the Rosenthal School Pals Reunion.
On Dominion Day (July 1) in 1931, August and Minnie Summach hosted a reunion of local families in which at least one of the parents had attended Rosenthal school in Renfrew County, Ontario. A photographer from Saskatoon took a panoramic photograph of about 14 families and other guests.42,43

Fred Zummach was included in a say 1940 photograph(see below) which may have been a homemade valentine. A heart was drawn around Grandpa Fred with the caption "I get a bang out of you". To the left side is written "Lazy Boy."

It was hard for me to date this photo since Grandpa appears to be older, but the yard seemed unfamiliar. I do not remember the shd in the background. The workshop behind Grandpa is the same building as in the early picture of kids playing in the snow, but the addition on the left side was expanded to become a garage. The view is to the northwest. The steam engine shed must be obscured behind this building. This workshop was still in photos in the early 1960's.

The farm yard photo that Cheryl provided (taken about 1932) helped put the buildings in context.33,49

The following biographical information was published at Saskatchewan Diamond Jubilee 1965 Edition -- Asquith History, 1965:
Trip from Ontario Took Eleven Days
     by A. Summach
[:NB:] It took my brother, Fred, and me 11 days and nights to come from Killaloe, Ontario to Asquith by freight. Our horses got very tired standing. We had our bunk on the lumber at the other end of the car, and I well remember one night when we were sidetracked, one of the horses fell in its sleep and I awoke suddenly and jumped up so quickly that I nearly knocked myself (out) by hitting my head on the top of the box car. We had barrels in the car for watering the stock and, when we would come to water along the track, the freight would stop and let us fill our
barrels. We stopped at Saskatoon and were told that we wouldn't get out to Asquith for a week, so I paid an extra $48 to have a locomotive run us out to Asquith, as that was as far as the line had been built by 1907. Gus Picketts was the first man that we met when we landed at Asquith, as he was looking for business for his livery barn.
In the spring of 1906, I came to Regina to work. I had filed on a homestead at Bethune but, when I went to see it, I found that it was very stoney (sic.) I had had all the stone-picking that I wanted in Ontario so I decided to cancel it.
I worked north of Regina and, in the fall, went back to Ontario.
Brother Fred came out in 1907 to see the country, as the old saying was, "Go west, young man." In the fall, he returned to Ontario and, between the two of us, we convinced our mother to sell the farm down there. She loaned us the money to move out here and start farming in the spring of 1908.
We brought out two carloads of settlers' effects which contained five cows, four horses, and enough lumber for a small house.
We batched during the winter for four years, and our dear mother cooked for us during the summer. The main diet for the first winter was cornmeal.
After making one payment on a binder in the fall of 1908, we had the sum of 10 cents in cash left. The cows were the means of supplying us with groceries, as I used to churn and sell butter to Sandy Currie for 15 cents a pound.
Then I got married and moved west one mile to Jack Beels' homestead, which I purchased. We lived there for four years, then moved back a mile east where we purchased a half section from Kenneth and Justin Cummings. We lived there for 10 years and then moved to the present home farm in
1926.From then on I began to expand, buying more land. The first land was purchased at $20 an acre -- CPR land -- and from there I went as high as $60 an acre -- the top price I had paid.
     Could This Happen Again
We hear a lot of complaints today about hard times when wheat is selling at $1.68 net to the farmer, but I remember the year of 1912 when the harvest was late and the wheat froze.
William Rousell told me that he shipped a carload of wheat to Winnipeg. After threshing it out of the snow, they had to pry it out of the car at Fort William. It didn't pay for the freight.
The railroad company sent him a bill for the balance of the freight. He answered and told them that he had no money, but that he would send then a carload of wheat.
We talk about the hungry thirties -- I shipped five carloads of No.1 hard wheat from Juniata and it netted me 19 cents a bushel.
William Pilgrim loaded a carload at Asquith that year. Harvey, my son, was buying track wheat for James Richardson and Sons, and Mr. Pilgrim received 13 cents a bushel of an advance. It graded "smutty". He paid 8 a bushel of threshing and paid Harvey 3 cents a bushel to haul it and put it in the car, when this grade came down to 13 cents a bushel they sold him out. That left Mr. Pilgrim 2 cents net after paying for threshing and hauling.34

In the obituary of Eddie Summach who died 10 January 1967, his grandfather, Fred Summach, of Asquith, SK, was listed as a survivor.64

The honorary pallbearers were: Walter Rice, William Pilgrim, Roy Warren, Bert Johnson, Bill Junop and Ivan Smith. The active pallbearers were: George Seymour, Harvey Summach, Ted Forsyth, Ted Summach, Charlie Boland and Elmer Krieger
I don't remember the graveside service as much as driving in the funeral procession from Saskatoon to Asquith, headlights on as a sign of respect, and travelling slowly.20

; Pat O'Dwyer . . . super service
...We looked at the crops, including Neepawa wheat, a star performer. Still, as it turned out, the stories I found most fascinating were Del's recollections of George H. Rutledge.

"Rutledge," he said, "came up from Iowa, and he broke up the country with a Reeves steamer -- a double compound (two cylinders)." That engineering description was lost on me, but I got the picture a little more clearly when Del said the Reeves was bigger than anything at the Western Development Museum in Saskatoon.

Del's father, Fred Summach, had a Case steam engine, and a 44-inch separator.

"Both Rutledge and Dad threshed the whole area," Del remembered. Big cook cars, big bunk cars, big crews, two water tanks to quench the thirst of that powerful steamer.

Those were halcyon days. Rutledge and Summach came to the district about the same time, in 1906. Summach brought his own lumber with him from Rockingham (Geulph (sic)), Ontario, and with it built his home. It's still there as the core of the home where Fred Jr. and his family live. It has been extended from the original. Yet. there it is, a fulfillment of the promise it held out to its builders 70 years ago.

Del took me over to the Rutledge homestead, and what memories it stirred in him. Rutledge pioneered in the use of machinery in the horse-and-buggy era and he took young Del Summach under his wing and taught him the mechanics of the tractor, the thresher, their operation and repair...65
