DESBORO' MAN'S SUICIDE AFTER "DISGRACE" OF SEPARATION FROM WIFE
SON FINDS HIM GASSED UNDER HEAP OF BLANKETS
LAST NOTE READ
HOUSE ENTERED VIA CELLAR
A VERDICT of "Suicide during temporary insanity" was recorded at an inquest at Desborough, near Market Harborough, to-day, on Percy Michael, aged 60, grocer, of Gold-street, Desborough.
Mr. J. C. Parker, the Kettering coroner, conducted the inquest.
John Robert Foster Michael, who lives next door to his father's shop in Gold-street, told the Coroner that at 5.30 last Friday, he noticed that a window in his father's house was shut. This aroused his suspicion, and he gained an entry to the house through a cellar window.
MOUND OF BLANKETS
He went to his father's bedroom, where there was a strong smell of gas. He saw what he thought was a mound of blankets on the floor and tried to move them, but at first the gas got hold of him.
When he had turned off the tap he removed the blankets and found his father underneath them.
His father had no business worries, but the fact that he was separated from his wife appeared to worry him. Though he won the case he looked upon it as a disgrace that he he (sic) had to go into court.
A note addressed to the son read as follows:
[:NB:]"Dear Robert,-Good-bye. I cannot stand this any longer. Give my best love to my darling grandchildren. There will be enough to pay all debts and probably a few pounds over, which I hope you will place in the bank. Once more goodbye. From your broken-hearted father.''
"FEELING ILL"
The body was identified by Michael's daughter-in-law, Lilian Bertha Michael, who said she saw him only a few hours before the tragedy on Friday, when he mentioned he was going to close up the shop for an hour or two, as he was feeling ill.
Later she found the shop locked, but thought he was out on business.
Dr. J. A. Dowds, of Desborough, said he was called to the house and found the man was lying on the floor of the bedroom. Death was apparently due to carbon monoxide poisoning. There was a strong smell of gas in the room.
Police-constable M. Willey, of Desborough, also gave evidence.8
