He was born on 21 October 1886 at Bradsjo, Bruk, Westmarunland (Västmanland?) County, Sweden.2 Gustav married Christine Rolin on 18 December 1916 at Asquith, RM of Loganton, Saskatchewan, Canada, according to a notation in his military service file and his 1943 Petition for Naturalization.2,3 Alternatively, they married on 17 December 1916 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, according to his 1939 Declaration of Intention seeking U.S. naturalization.4,5
Gustav Werner Bostrom died on 25 January 1963 at Gresham, Multnomah County, Oregon, USA, at age 76.6,7
Introductory Overview:
Gustav Werner Bostrom of Asquith is not included in the Asquith and District Honour Roll for WWI.
Other comments:
Werner Bostrom was farming in the Asquith district prior to his enlistment in June of 1916. He was wed in Dec 1916, and deserted in about April of 1917. In 1918, He and his wife went to the US, where they remained.8 He witnessed the beginning of military service of Carl Brandvold; "Brandvold, Carl."9 Werner Bostrom witnessed the beginning of military service of Colin Holgate; "Holgate, Colin."10,11 Werner Bostrom witnessed the beginning of military service of Andrew Nodtvedt.12
Werner Bostrom of Asquith began military service on 19 June 1916 at the age of 29 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, joining the 223rd Overseas Battalion (Canadian Scandinavians).. He was a farmer of the Asquith district, single with no prior military experience. Although his Attestation form indicates he was single, the "Particulars of Family..." form was later amended to list his wife, Christina Bastrim (sic) of 136 5th Ave. North, Saskatoon. He was described as being 5' 6 1/2" with a clear and fair complexion, blue eyes and light hair. On his Attestation (enlistment) papers, he listed his next-of-kin/contact as his father, Agust Bostrom of Sweden. He was assigned regimental number 294516.2 Pte. Gustav Bostrom ended his military service circa 21 July 1917. His military file contains a notation that he was a "deserter" dated Apr 21, 1917; with another of July 21, 1917 that I assume is the date he was struck from the nominal roll. From his later US draft registration and naturalization records, it appears they moved to the US after his desertion..
He and Christine Rolin immigrated on 17 April 1918 through Noyes, Minnesota, USA, from Saskatoon on the Canadian Pacific Railroad (CPR) according to their Declaration of Intention. Note that this border crossing and declaration were not referenced in subsequent immigration documents.14
Gustav Werner Bostrom registered for the draft on 12 September 1918 at Newport, Washington, USA, at the age of 31. He listed his next-of-kin/contact person as his wife, Tina Bostrom.1
Gustav Werner and Christine Bostrom appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Metaline Falls, Pend Oreille, Washington, enumerated 1 January 1920, described as a teamster for a cement plant.15 Gustav Werner Bostrom and Christine Rolin applied for naturalization on 28 October 1939 at Newport, Washington, USA. . Also listed were their four children. This Declaration does not mention their residence in Canada per their earlier application.4,5 Gustav Werner Bostrom and Christine Rolin applied for naturalization on 10 June 1943 at Portland, Oregon, USA. According to their Petition for Naturalization #21318.16 Gustav Werner Bostrom was naturalized on 15 June 1944.5
