He was commissioned as a lieutenant in the British army. He rose to the rank of captain. In 1759 during the French and Indian Wars (1755 - 1762) he served as a Captain in the Connecticut 2nd Regiment, 13th Company, under Colonel Nathan Whiting, including the attack on Quebec in 1759 where General's Montcalm (New France) and Wofle (Britain) both died.
At one point, he had command of Groton Fort (aka Fort Griswold) at Groton, Connecticut, built in 1775 to 1778)
According to a DAR lineage for Camilla Stephens Cook, he commanded a company of Connecticut troops from 1777 to 1781.
