A Tribute to Dad
Things will never be the same again. Dad will always be remembered by many precious memories.

Dad taught us children in a strong Christian tradition, and we are all grateful for his strength and direction while growing up.

Dad will probably be most remembered for his humour. His humour would be difficult to describe to someone who had never met him. He had the power to make most everyone forget their problems by a story or even a comment.

Dad's mechanical abilities will be remembered by us all. His love of fixing something rather than buying it new. His collection of spare and replacement parts to use "just in case" sometime they were needed. Dad also got a special feeling form being able to find a purchase at a special price. The reward often wasn't in the money saved, but in the telling his friends of the find.

Dad loved the outdoors -- his hunting and fishing with his relatives and friends was a priority in his life. Even through his tougher financial times or in his periods of bad health, he found his vacation and friends before his own comfort.

Dad loved to eat. He once said, when on a diet for his health a few years ago, that life was hardly worth living if a fella couldn't eat. His celebration of life was often held at a dining room table, smorgasbord or barbeque.

At every one of these celebrations he will be missed and remembered until we meet again at another celebration supper with all his friends and Dad's great humour.18,16
It was a cold winter morning as I set out from Sherwood Park for Uncle Deb's funeral. As I headed across country to the highway the windshield in my 1975 Grand Prix cracked from left to right. There must have been an invisible stone bruise under my left windshield wiper.

I always regretted that I did not think of inviting Johnny Potter to come with me. I called him when I returned, and could hear the disappointment in his voice.33

Her headdress of yellow 'mums and white camations matched her bouquet. Her other attendant was her sister, Cora, who wore similar gown of yellow, and carried mauve and white camations.

A wedding reception was held at the bride's home where supper was served to the immediate relatives of the bride and groom. Linda Rutledge, niece, of the bride, carried the register to the guests.

For her daughter's wedding the bride's mother wore a dusty rose crepe dress with pearl-white accessories and a corsage of Talisman roses.

Her floor length veil fell from a lace covered Juliet cape. She carried a bouquet of red roses and white carnations.

The bride's sister, Anne, of Deep River, Ont. as maid of honor, wore a three-quarter length gown of mauve eyelet organdy with cape. Her headdress of yellow 'mums and white camations matched her bouquet. Her other attendant was her sister, Cora, who wore similar gown of yellow, and carried mauve and white camations.

Mr. Fred Summach Jr of Asquith, attended his brother. Mr. Kenneth Summach and Mr. Leonard Rutledge were ushers. During the signing of the register, Miss Donna Knight was soloist.

The couple later left by car on an extended trip to the United States and Mexico. For travelling the bride and groom chose charcoal, grey worsted suits. The bride's accessones were red and black with a corsage of red roses.

Mom identified the child as possibly Emerson, but there are two of them, one in the background is in a dress, so they might be Muriel and Delbert. If so, taken about 1920

In circa 1920, Emerson, Muriel and Delbert were included in a family photograph in which Mom (Estelle) identified the children in the doorway as Emerson, Delbert and Muriel about 1920.16

     Mother Passed Away
written by Ron
Mother passed away early Saturday evening at Parkridge Centre in Saskatoon. She was surrounded by a number of family. She had experienced pneumonia in the past few days.

Mother had broken her hip in August and her hip surgery and rehab were progressing well. She was looking forward to returning to her condo.

She was feeling a lack of energy a few days ago and she was taking an antibiotic for suspected pneumonia. She had had pneumonia in past years and she had usually recovered fairly quickly.

A number of relatives had gone to visit mother Saturday evening. Cousin Denny and his wife Doreen had taken over a funeral program from Uncle Mick's service. Mother was doing fine and she looked good. However, she soon commented that she was having trouble breathing. Cousin George prayed for her while Candy went for a nurse. Mother was put on oxygen.

"Freddie's girls" along with Doreen sang a couple of hymns which mother enjoyed.

The nurse commented that mother was likely not going to pull through this time.

I first heard about how serious mother's condition was about 8:00 p.m. Saturday. Denny called me on my cell just as I was leaving a restaurant. (Terry and Lois are in Calgary for Jake Kroeker's Memorial Service on Sunday afternoon. We also met Carol and her daughters for dinner.)

Denny reported that mother was not doing well. We drove home and there was a message on our answering machine to call my sister Debee in Saskatoon. (My brother-in-law John was at Parkridge Centre as well.)

Mother had passed away. It was a bit unexpected in light of her progress after surgery in August. However, pneumonia can often complicate recovery in people of advanced age. We had just been to see mother two weeks ago for her 91st birthday. It was a wonderful weekend. Mother was feeling better than she had for a long time.

Mother had a faith in Christ that had carried her through life's challenges over the years. She had told us many times that she would feel blessed to pass into Christ's presence quickly. She did not want to linger on in a nursing home. We feel that she was blessed on Saturday evening to get a family "send off" to her new home.

Of course we will miss her. She was doing fairly well but we knew at her age each day was a gift. She still enjoyed her quilting and crafts. What more could one ask for?

We will be having a memorial service in Saskatoon with a later inurnment likely in Creston, B.C.10

Obituary
Blanche Olive Summach

Summach – Blanche Olive, passed away suddenly at Saskatoon on September 28, 2013, at the age of 91 years. Olive was born in Delisle, Saskatchewan on September 14, 1922 and lived in the Asquith area until January 1943 when she married Harvey and moved to Saskatoon. Olive and Harvey moved to Calgary, Alberta in 1977 and then to Creston, B.C. in 1981. Olive is survived by her sons, Ron (Adeline) of Calgary and Wes (Maria) of Grimshaw, Alberta and by her daughter Debee (John) of Saskatoon. She is survived by grandchildren Jason Summach (Anne), Aileen Sadler (Jeff), Nadine Summach, Melissa Horn (David), and Jeremiah Summach; Tennise Taras and Kira Taras; and great-grandchildren Connor and Ceilidh Summach; Mitchell, Marshall, and Abigail Sadler; Abrielle and Grayson Horn along with many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Harvey in 1997, her sons Edward in 1967 and Jodey in 2004, sister Muriel (1992), sister Estelle (2001), and brothers Emerson (1964), Delbert (1983), Malcolm (1998), Manley (2006), and Fred (2008). Olive is survived by brother Ken (Doris) and by sister Shirley (Ted). Olive was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a dear friend to many. She leaves us with many treasured memories. Olive will be fondly remembered by all who knew and loved her. She enjoyed quiet conversations sprinkled with a joke or two followed by a smile. Her sense of humor was genetic. She will lovingly be remembered for playing hymns and gospel music on the piano, organ, and accordion. Her strong unbending faith in Christ carried her through life's challenges right to her passing. Olive was a mother who could do almost everything. She thought nothing of moving furniture around the house despite her small size. Her sewing and baking were second to none. Quilting was a passion. Her kids and grandkids remember her singing gospel choruses as she rocked them in her favorite rocking chair. She will be missed by her family and friends. Funeral services will be held at Emmanuel Baptist Church on Saturday, October 19, 2013 with Pastors Lou Leventhal and Robin Sloboda officiating. If desired, donations may be made in Olive's memory to Samaritan's Purse. Cremation is by Acadia McKague's Funeral Centre. Inurnment will take place at Creston, B.C. at a later date.

Olive Summach Eulogy
Jayson Summach
When I heard the news that Olive, my grandmother, had died, I was speechless. It took what seemed like a long time just to wrap my head around what I was hearing. Certainly, my response had something to do with being startled awake by the phone; it was evening here, and North Carolina is a couple of time zones away. But still... the news was just so unlikely that I was caught completely off guard --

And that doesn't make much sense, does it? Olive was 91. Over the last several years, she had endured a succession of health problems and emergency hospitalizations. In fact, at the time of her passing, she was in the hospital, recovering from a hip replacement. But that's just it: she was recovering. The surgery had been successful. She was a recovery success story-in-the-making. Rehab staff and family were estimating when she'd be ready to return to her condo. So, I don't feel especially foolish for being caught by surprise by Olive's passing, because I suspect that she was a little bit surprised by it, too.

We called her "The Energizer Bunny." Where did that uncommon resilience come from? She bore up -- and even thrived -- under difficult, even heartbreaking circumstances: she was principal caregiver during the slow physical decline and passing of two sons; she adjusted to life without her husband, Harvey, living independently for the last 16 years; and in recent years she endured the loss of many close friends and family? Without question, the Holy Spirit was at work, lending Olive a remarkable measure of peace, patience, and faithfulness.

The Holy Spirit is at work in me, too -- but I don't know that many of you would single me out as especially peaceful or patient. You have to agree, Olive's resilience was exceptional. And as many of you have shared with me through your texts and emails, her resilience brings to mind the peace, patience, and faithfulness of Jesus. There just isn't any way to wear someone down who already considers their life forfeit – whose happiness is indexed to something other than their own interests and ambition.

What Olive loved to do, she loved because she could do it for us. From her sewing room and rocking chair, she invented stuffed dinosaurs and mice, computer dust covers, curtains, Cowichan sweaters, quilts, and custom dog warmers. She sewed fashion-forward outfits in stretch-polyester that, unfortunately, wore out very slowly.

In the kitchen, she had a gift for carbohydrates. You could starve to death on her hamburgers -- but the buns, chocolate cake, sugar cookies, and fried scones were another story. Clearly, only a small fraction of that baking ever made it to her own tea plate. Her stores of Christmas baking, laid down in the freezer or under the back stairs, never lasted as long as she expected; but she didn't try very hard to find better hiding places.

Caring for family was Olive's daily office: she bathed and diapered; scratched backs, soothed headaches, massaged feet, and prayed. And although she meant well, I learned as a boy to hide my cuts and scrapes from her, as her greatest joy was to pull out the Am-Medic antiseptic spray, which might as well have been liquid fire.

With that one possible exception, Olive did exactly as Wes described in an email: She spent her life making life better for us. And that resonates so strongly for me with Jesus words, recorded in Luke 9:24. "Whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it." Olive Summach didn't give up her life all at once on September 28th, 2013. She spent 91 years laying it down, one day at a time, for her Lord, her family, and her friends. We will miss her.33

The following obituary appeared in the newspaper the Saskatoon StarPhoenix published in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan 28 July 2017 :
Shirley Opal Forsyth
October 22, 1930 - July 22, 2017
Shirley went to be with her Lord Jesus, to take up residence in the place He has prepared for her, becoming part of the great cloud of witnesses in the courts of heaven, Saturday, July 22nd. Her last days were spent in the tender care of the loving staff of the Evergreen Baptist Campus of Care in White Rock. She is survived by her devoted husband of over 67 years, Edwin (Ted) Clare Forsyth; daughters Kathryn Heather Budd (Gord) of Victoria; Shelley Lee Page of Surrey; and son Dwynn David Forsyth of Saskatoon; along with 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Shirley was born at Asquith, SK as the youngest of 10 siblings to Frederick and Esther Summach, and spent the first half of her life on the farm, first in service to her parents, farm hands and siblings, and then as partner and helper to her husband, all in the Asquith region. In 1967, after moving to Saskatoon, she joined retail sales with Sears in the china and housewares department, allowing her to pursue her passion for collecting fine china. She resumed the important role of house mom during her time in Three Hills, AB through the late 1970's and early 80's, followed by her retirement years living at Emma Lake; Langley; Penticton; Kelowna; and finally in South Surrey. An artist extraordinaire, equally as talented with paintbrush and canvas, a crochet needle, or a sewing machine. She shined with the gift of music in singing classic hymns in the Baptist church as a soloist, in duets and the choir for many years. She will be fondly remembered, missed, and loved, leaving us with the legacy of being a strong woman of faith and character, an adoring and faithful wife, and a caring mother and grandmother. Mom took her last breath about 2 pm at the Evergreen Baptist Care Campus and went to the place Jesus had prepared for her.      The following obituary appeared in the newspaper the Saskatoon StarPhoenix published in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan 17 September 2018 :
Edwin Clare Forsyth
February 28, 1926 - September 13, 2018
Edwin (Ted) Clare Forsyth
Ted joined his wife Shirley, his Lord Jesus Christ, and his Heavenly Father on Thursday, September 13th at the age of 92. His last days were spent in the tender care and loving company of staff at Evergreen Baptist Campus of Care of White Rock, BC. He will be fondly remembered by the loving family he leaves behind: daughters Kathryn Heather Budd (Gord) of Victoria; Shelley Lee Page of Surrey; and son Dwynn David Forsyth of Saskatoon, along with eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Ted was born on the family farm near Asquith, SK, to Oliver and Edith Forsyth and spent his life in the agriculture industry, primarily as farmer and later as equipment service manager with Flexi-coil. He is survived by his sister Dorothy Bygrave and brother Keith Forsyth. His life was a testimony to the goodness of God and the love of Christ, touching all that knew him with his generosity, loyalty and acts of service. Able to repair and build almost anything, he will be missed by many but we rejoice in knowing that he is finally home, where he can walk again without pain, hear the soft whispers of his life long love, and enjoy the company of his friends and family that have gone on before him.
A service of remembrance may be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to Evergreen Baptist Campus of Care in his memory would be gladly received. Arrangements entrusted to Alternatives Funeral & Cremation Services, Aldergrove, BC.
