Guilford
...Died, at his home in Miller township, on Sunday, July 3d, 1881, Jacob Z. Nowlin, aged about 35 years. The deceased was born in the township in which he died, and was the youngest son of the late Jeremiah and Pamelia Nowlin.
The deceased left a widow, two beautiful little daughter (sic), and three brothers. The deceased was afflicted for a long time, but seemed to bear his sufferings with a great patience. His three brothers, although, having families of their own, watched at his bedside alternately for many months, perhaps not missing one night; much credit is due them for being so faithful and kind to their dying brother. The deceased was universally known as a good man and kind neighbor. He left behind a large, valuable and beautiful property. Funeral services by Rev. B. Plummer, assisted by Rev. Geo. Cochran. His remains were intered (sic) at Pella Cemetery.9

The following obituary appeared in the weekly newspaper The Lawrenceburg Register published in Lawrenceburg, Indiana 21 July 1881:
Obituary
Jacob Z. Nowlin was born in this county March 16, 1846. The greater portion of his lite was spent near the place of his birth and childhood. He died on Sabbath morning, July 3d, 18S1, aged 35 years, 3 months and 17 days. He was married to Anna E. Boatman, January 13, 1875. His wife and two children are left in deep bereavement by his death. The subject of this sketch availed himself of the educational advantages offered by the public schools; but these were not sufficient to satisfy his thirst for knowledge. He studied with much eagerness and with marked success at the National Normal School of Ludlow, Ohio. He devoted himself to teaching and achieved much success in this work. The remainder of his life was spent amid the labors and duties of the farm. The deceased had never identified himself with any branch of the christian church.but was a firm believer in the teachings of christianity and gave his sympathy and support to charitable. and christian institutions. Ile was an earnest and warm friend to justice and truth. He was a man of strong convictions, and the integrity of his life shone clear and bright in obedience to convictions of right and duty. His influence was for right. He not only entertained theories concerning duty, but also gave a beautiful and practical expression of honesty and integrity in his daily living. G. C.11

In the obituary of Clara Sykes who died 2 July 1938, his father, Jacob Nowlin was listed as predeceased.17

However, it does not support the LDS 1881 transcription which shows a birthplace of Quebec for all of the family except for John the father. For John the birthplace is England, and for his son George it is a ditto mark, not a Q. However, the ditto mark does not appear to extend down for the rest of the family.
