It is also rumored that Frederick may have died during a fight over alter vestments in St. John's Luthern Church when some members left to form another St. John's Lutheran across the road less than a mile away.
Apparently, Frederick was instrumental in starting the first St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Bonnechere because years later a monument was dedicated to him. It reads:
"The first St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church Bonnechere of the Pittsburg LCA, Canada Synod, Now ELCIC was erected on this site in 1864. Rev. L. H. Gerndt began the mission here in 1861. Donated to the Glory of God and in memory of Fredrick Schutt by K. Gerhard Schutt."
The monument is on the hilltop in the cemetery across the road from the church that stands now. The earlier one was burnt and later relocated across the road. The original sign "Bonnechere" is still above the doorway.
Friedrich Schutt is buried at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery (Germanics and Bonnechere). His tombstone is in German. His wife, if she is buried here, does not have a tombstone or else she is buried elsewhere.3

Friedrich (became Frederick once Anglicized) probably sailed aboard the "Main" out of Hamburg to Canada. He came from Pomerania. Pomerania was actually in Poland, but had been conquered by Prussia, a German speaking nation. The single largest immigration wave of Germans to Canada occurred between 1858 and 1890. This corresponded to the rule of Otto von Bismarck who had catapulted to the position of Prussia's prime minister in 1862. After the war with Austria in 1866, Prussia also ruled over Germany. He continued to take young men and to fight the Franco-Prussian War. He accomplished his goal of uniting Germany once again and remained in power until 1890. Prussia which was under German control until WWII when it fell back to Poland. Pommerania west of the Oder River was called Vorpommern. Immigrants to Canada between 1832 and 1930 all passed through Gross Ile (near Quebec City). Germany had gone through tough economic and political times, with three wars in seven years. Military service was compulsory so many young men to(decided) start new lives overseas.
Frederick received 8 acres on lots 30-31, concession 17 in Wilberforce Township through the Free Land Grants Act (Sessional Papers 1861 24 Victoria (14) "Progress of the Prussian Emigrants Settled on the Ottawa"). By 1872, Freiderich purchased 111 from the crown for $88 on 10 June 1872 (Harvest of Stones, by Brenda Lee-Whiting, page 20).
In 1860, William Sinn, an immigration agent, prepared a report on Prussian immigrants in the Ottawa Valley. He found 50 families in Renfrew County including Friedrich Schutt in Wilberforce Township (Harvest of Stones, page 42).
"William Duck served as the crown attorney and clerk of the peace appointed by Renfrew County council when it was first formed in 1866. One of his tasks was to approve applications for naturalization whereby immigrants from non-British countries could acquire all the rights and capacities of a natural-born British subject". Frederick Schutt received his naturalization papers from Duck on 24 December, 1868. (Harvest of Stones, page 195). There was open hostility against Germans who could not speak English properly and Frederick's descendants most likely met with this prejudice.2
