On March 9th, Mr. Dean Carscadden, Thornbury, passed peace fully to his long home in his 81st year. Deceased was a man of sterling character revered and respected by all. He was born in Ireland in 1825 and came with his parents to Clarke Township where he lived for a number of years, afterwards moving to Darlington and later to Collingwood township. His wife was Miss Isabel Carscadden of Clarke. He was a very active member and worker in the Methodist church and was the means of building the first church in Clarke township which is occupied at the present time.9

The following obituary appeared in the newspaper the Orono News published in Orono, Ontario 1 May 1930:
A Pioneer Kendal Farmer and Veteran Orangeman
"Death Claims Joseph Carscadden in his 104th Year , was Veteran Orangeman of 103 years of earthly life, life filled with its share of joys as well as sorrows, was ended when Joseph Carscadden died Sunday evening at the home of his son-in-law, Mr. John W. Hutchison, Thornbury. The end of life for this venerable man came peacefully, the spirit taking flight when he was asleep. Such a span of time on earth made Mr. Carscadden one of the oldest citizens in Canada, a life dwelt under the reign of five British sovereigns. It is also a life that knew the hardships of an early Canadian life, as well as the haven of peace and comfort in his later days, which his daughter, Mrs. Hutchison, so well provided. 103 years of life ended in sleep! What a beautiful ending! Deceased was the youngest child of ten children (8 boys and two girls) born to Mr. and Mrs.Robt. Carscadden of Fermanagh, Ireland. Deceased was also born there , and was the last to die of the family. Mr. Carscadden was eleven years of age when he encountered his first sorrow . On the passage over to Canada, which, by the way, took 18 weeks sailing, father and son witnessed the death and burial of wife and mother at sea. The father and the subject of this sketch landed in Clark Township, County of Durham, where two brothers, John and William, had settled after coming from Ireland a year before. Both of these brothers are now deceased. Joseph and his father, after working a farm in the Township where they first landed, moved to near Peterboro on a 100 - acre (mostly bush) farm, selling their previous holdings to Brother John Carscadden. Here again struggles of making a farm were endured, the deceased’s father passing away there (Peterboro) after twelve years' residence in Canada. Previous to coming to the farm at Peterboro, the subject of this sketch was married to Miss Mary Jane Hare, a Peterboro girl, who died 34 years ago. Twelve children were born to this union, one child dying in infancy, and another passing, leaving a wife and four children to mourn his demise. A unique incident is that the five boys in this family of twelve were born first. After 12 or 13 years farming near Peterboro, Mr.and Mrs. Carscadden and family moved to the farm on the 8th Concession of Collingwood Township, now where his son, John A., resides, and who, at present, is quite ill. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Carscadden later disposed of the farm to the son and retired to Collingwood, 48 years ago this month. Here the mother was called to join the Great Majority. The husband then transferred his residence to a 50 - acre farm just within the limits of the same town named above. Again the moving spirit took hold and, selling the farm, he moved to Maple Street, Collingwood. Thornbury was the next residence of Mr. and Mrs. Carscadden , (Mr. C. having married again) the couple residing where Mr. Alex Weir now lives. Here his second wife died, and disposing of his Thornbury residence, he moved to Guelph, where he lived a few years. Back then to Collingwood, where he lived until a couple of years ago, when he came to Thornbury to spend his remaining days with his daughter here. Of the family left to mourn his demise there are, Wm. Robert, of Duluth; Thomas Jas., in Edmonton; John A., on the homestead; Mrs. Thos. Patterson (Mary Adelaide) of Orono; Mrs .Johnston (Flora Jane) of Duluth; Mrs. David Johnston (Anna Eliza) of Parry Sound; Mrs. Geo. Stewart (Isabella V.) of Creemore; Mrs. Wm. Morris (Margaret) of Avening; Mrs . John Hutchison (Alice) of Thornbury, and Mrs. Will Niebergall (Emma) of Parry Sound. Mr. Carscadden was an ardent member of the then Methodist Church, a staunch Conservative, and probably held the record in Canada, for being a member longest in the Orange Order . It was just last year in the Orange parade on July 12, in Thornbury that Mr. Carscadden won the longest membership prize, joining the Clarke Twp. Orange Lodge some 85 years ago."
