     Augusta Markus was recorded as mother of the bride at the marriage of Otto W Biesenthal and Annie Killow on 31 July 1907.18

     Mrs. William Kelo appeared on the 1921 Canadian Census of Wilberforce Twp., Renfrew County, Ontario, enumerated 1 June 1921. William was described as farming on her own farm.13
     In the obituary of Martin Markus who died 17 August 1925, his daughter, Augusta Kelow of Wilberforce, was listed as a survivor.6,19

The death of Mrs. Augusta Kelo, prominent Wilberforce Township resident, occurred Tuesday night at Pembroke Cottage Hospital. Mrs. Kelo, who was in her 68th year. had been ailing for some tune. A life-long resident of Wilberforce Township. Mrs. Kelo's death comes as a great shock to her relatives and many friends.

Mrs Kelo was born in Wilberforce Township in 1866: daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs Martin Markus. She us survived by two sons, Solomon and August Kelo, at home; six daughters, Mrs 0. Biesenthal, Port Arthur. Mrs. H. A. Brown. Port Arthur; Mrs. W. F. Tate, Montreal; Mrs. C. M. Bromley. Cloverdale, B.C; Mrs. W F. Draves. Detroit; Mrs. H. Plummer, Pembroke; one brother, William Markus, Pembroke; one sister, Mrs. C. Pankie, Pembroke.

The funeral will be held on Friday afternoon from her late residence to Zion Evangelical Church and cemetery, Wilberforce. The funeral service will be conducted by Rev. J. S. Burns.5


     Augusta Markus was recorded as the mother of the bridegroom at the marriage of Solomon F. Kelo and Rosa D. A. Karau on 4 October 1933.20

A quiet and charming autumn house wedding took place at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Markus, 403 Murray street, Pembroke, Wednesday evening, September 28, at 8.30. when Miss Edith Meron Markus became the bride of Mr. A. John Butt, of Emsdale, Ont., son of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Butt. of Depot Harbor. Rev. R. H. Waterman officiate . The marriage took place under an arch of autumn flowers which were mingled with bright autumn flowers. T

he bride was given in marriage by her father and was sweet in a poudre blue georgette. made with slashed tunic effect over beige, and wore grey shoes and hose. Her shower bouquet was of American Beauty roses and lily-of-the-valley. Mrs. Fred Crabtree, "Glenview," Todmorden, England. was the only attendant and was in a Mediterranean crepe romain. with diamante trimming and wore a corsage of ophelia roses. Mr. Bertram Markus, of Montreal. brother of the bride, was best man. Lohengrin's Wedding March was played by Miss Anna Meits.

A buffet supper was served to the guests and Mr. and Mrs. Butt left on the midnight train for Montreal. Toronto and Niagara, and will take up residence in Emsdale. Travelling the bride wore a navy blue velour coat, with kolinsky fur trimming and a small model hat to match.

Among the out-of-town guests were Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Butt, Depot Harbor; Mr. Frank Butt, of Chicago. and Mrs. J. Craig, sister of the groom, of Chicago.24 William F. Markus, of Pembroke, was listed as the father of the groom in the marriage of Ezra John Markus and Mary Roberta Hilliard on 5 April 1930.25
     Willie and Julia Markus appeared on the 1931 Canadian Census of Pembroke, Renfrew County, Ontario, enumerated 1 June 1931. Their children Viola T. and Helen were listed as living with them.15
     William Markus, of Pembroke, was recorded as father of the bride at the marriage of Fred Lloyd Flatt and Viola T. Markus on 14 June 1934 at Pembroke, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada.26

Mr. and Mrs. William Markus of Pembroke, announce the engagement of their youngest daughter, Helen, to Sergeant J. M. McDiarmid. R.C.E.. son of the late Mr. Alex McDiarmid (sic), of Cobden, and Mrs. L. G. Morgan. of Ottawa. The marriage will take place in September.27

     William J. (sic) Markus was referenced in an article about the wedding anniversary ofCharles Panke and Minnie Markus which appeared on 27 March 1942 at the newspaper, The Ottawa Journal, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, Minnie's brother; Valley Couple Wed 50 Years Sunday
     PEMBROKE, March 27.— (Staff )— Mr. and Mrs. Charles Panke, well-known local residents, will observe their fiftieth wedding anniversary at their borne, 412 Murray street, Sunday, when they will have a family reunion during the afternoon and will be at home to a large number of friends in the evening.
     Mr. Panke, who came to Pembroke when a young man, was formerly a contractor and is now a stonemason and bricklayer. He was born 74 years ago in Wilberforce township, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. August Panke. Mrs. Panke is an active worker in the Red Cross Society. She is the former Minnie Markus, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Martin Markus, and was born at Golden Lake 67 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Panke, who were married in Pembroke in 1892, are members of Zion Evangelical Church and take a prominent part in its activities.
     They have four daughters and three sons, Mrs. G. L. Plummer, Ottawa; Mrs. Lloyd Bender, San Diego, Cal; Mrs. George O'Dacre and Mrs. E. C. Hore, Pembroke; H. W. Panke, Paterson, N.J; A. C. Panke, Cleveland, Ohio, and F. W. Panke, Cincinnati, Ohio, and 10 grandchildren.
     Mr. Panke has four brothers, William Panke, Sudbury; Herman and John Panke, Pembroke, and Gustave Panke, Wilberforce, and Mrs. Panke has one brother, William J, Markus. They expect Mrs. Plummer and Mrs. H. W. Panke, and Mr. and Mrs. F. W. will be present.28
     The following obituary appeared in the newspaper The Ottawa Journal published in Ottawa, Ontario 5 June 1943:
William Markus Dies Was Prominent Pembroke Contractor
     William Markus, well-known builder and contractor and prominent Pembroke citizen, died in the Ottawa Civic hospital this morning (sic) as a result of complications following an operation which he underwent about a month ago. Mr. Markus was 74 years of age and up until several weeks ago maintained personal management of his contracting and building operations.
     He was born at Golden Lake and was s son of the late Martin Markus and his wife, Caroline Yourth. As a young man he moved to Pembroke, where he became engaged for a time in the contracting trade with the late J. W. Munro and later established his own business in the same field. For over 43 years he had successfully conducted this business on a large scale.
     An ardent Liberal in politics he was widely known throughout Renfrew county and once contested the North Renfrew riding but was defeated at the polls by the late Hun. E. A. Dunlop, former Provincial Treasurer.
     Also active in affairs of the church and divers fraternal organizations, the late Mr. Markus during his lifetime has filled many offices of responsibility and trust. He was a Past Master of the Pembroke Lodge A.F. and A.M., and Past Noble Grand of the local I.O.O.F., in which he received his 50-year veteran's jewel two years ago.
     In 1892 he married the former Julia Lidkea, who survives, with two sons, Lieut. E. J. Markus with the Canadian Army overseas, and Bert, Toronto. Four daughters, Mrs. W. M. R. Hamilton, Sault Ste. Marie; Mrs. A. J. Butt, Huntsville; Mrs. J. L. Flatt, Kapuskasing, and Mrs. J. M. MacDiarmid, of Pembroke, also survive with one sister, Mrs. Charles Panke, of Pembroke. There are also nine grandchildren.
     The funeral will be held under Masonic auspices, on Sunday afternoon from his late home, 402 Murray street, to the United Church cemetery.18


     In the obituary of Ruby C. Hamilton who died 9 December 1962, her parents, William Markus and Julia Markus were listed or implied as predeceased.29

     Charlie and Minnie Pankie appeared on the 1911 Canadian Census of Pembroke, Pembroke Twp., Renfrew County, Ontario, enumerated 5 June 1911. Charlie was described as an Evangelical and Stone Mason, House Building. Their children Lena, Henry, Alex, Edna, Mary, Wilfred and Orfa were listed as living with them.6
     Charles and Minnie Panke appeared on the 1921 Canadian Census of Pembroke, Renfrew County, Ontario, enumerated 1 June 1921. Charles was described as a building contractor. Their children Alexander C., Mary A, Wilfred F. and Orpha R were listed as living with them. As were his son-in-law and daughter, Lawrence Plummer and Lena A. Plummer and his granddaughter, an unknown person . A second son-in-law and daughter, Albert Hoare and Edna M Hoare were also included in the household.8
     In the obituary of Martin Markus who died 17 August 1925, his daughter, Mrs. Charles Pankie of Pembroke, was listed as a survivor.4,11

Valley Couple Wed 50 Years Sunday
     PEMBROKE, March 27.— (Staff )— Mr. and Mrs. Charles Panke, well-known local residents, will observe their fiftieth wedding anniversary at their borne, 412 Murray street, Sunday, when they will have a family reunion during the afternoon and will be at home to a large number of friends in the evening.
     Mr. Panke, who came to Pembroke when a young man, was formerly a contractor and is now a stonemason and bricklayer. He was born 74 years ago in Wilberforce township, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. August Panke. Mrs. Panke is an active worker in the Red Cross Society. She is the former Minnie Markus, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Martin Markus, and was born at Golden Lake 67 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Panke, who were married in Pembroke in 1892, are members of Zion Evangelical Church and take a prominent part in its activities.
     They have four daughters and three sons, Mrs. G. L. Plummer, Ottawa; Mrs. Lloyd Bender, San Diego, Cal; Mrs. George O'Dacre and Mrs. E. C. Hore, Pembroke; H. W. Panke, Paterson, N.J; A. C. Panke, Cleveland, Ohio, and F. W. Panke, Cincinnati, Ohio, and 10 grandchildren.
     Mr. Panke has four brothers, William Panke, Sudbury; Herman and John Panke, Pembroke, and Gustave Panke, Wilberforce, and Mrs. Panke has one brother, William J, Markus. They expect Mrs. Plummer and Mrs. H. W. Panke, and Mr. and Mrs. F. W. will be present.12

     In the obituary of William Markus who died 4 June 1943, her sister, Mrs. Charles Panke was listed as a survivor.13
     Wilhelmina Markus was referenced, but not by name, in the obituary of her husband Charles Panke Sr. who died May 1957; Two unidentified daughters also survived.14

Valley Couple Wed 50 Years Sunday
     PEMBROKE, March 27.— (Staff )— Mr. and Mrs. Charles Panke, well-known local residents, will observe their fiftieth wedding anniversary at their borne, 412 Murray street, Sunday, when they will have a family reunion during the afternoon and will be at home to a large number of friends in the evening.
     Mr. Panke, who came to Pembroke when a young man, was formerly a contractor and is now a stonemason and bricklayer. He was born 74 years ago in Wilberforce township, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. August Panke. Mrs. Panke is an active worker in the Red Cross Society. She is the former Minnie Markus, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Martin Markus, and was born at Golden Lake 67 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Panke, who were married in Pembroke in 1892, are members of Zion Evangelical Church and take a prominent part in its activities.
     They have four daughters and three sons, Mrs. G. L. Plummer, Ottawa; Mrs. Lloyd Bender, San Diego, Cal; Mrs. George O'Dacre and Mrs. E. C. Hore, Pembroke; H. W. Panke, Paterson, N.J; A. C. Panke, Cleveland, Ohio, and F. W. Panke, Cincinnati, Ohio, and 10 grandchildren.
     Mr. Panke has four brothers, William Panke, Sudbury; Herman and John Panke, Pembroke, and Gustave Panke, Wilberforce, and Mrs. Panke has one brother, William J, Markus. They expect Mrs. Plummer and Mrs. H. W. Panke, and Mr. and Mrs. F. W. will be present.10

A quiet and charming autumn house wedding took place at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Markus, 403 Murray street, Pembroke, Wednesday evening, September 28, at 8.30. when Miss Edith Meron Markus became the bride of Mr. A. John Butt, of Emsdale, Ont., son of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Butt. of Depot Harbor. Rev. R. H. Waterman officiate . The marriage took place under an arch of autumn flowers which were mingled with bright autumn flowers. T

he bride was given in marriage by her father and was sweet in a poudre blue georgette. made with slashed tunic effect over beige, and wore grey shoes and hose. Her shower bouquet was of American Beauty roses and lily-of-the-valley. Mrs. Fred Crabtree, "Glenview," Todmorden, England. was the only attendant and was in a Mediterranean crepe romain. with diamante trimming and wore a corsage of ophelia roses. Mr. Bertram Markus, of Montreal. brother of the bride, was best man. Lohengrin's Wedding March was played by Miss Anna Meits.

A buffet supper was served to the guests and Mr. and Mrs. Butt left on the midnight train for Montreal. Toronto and Niagara, and will take up residence in Emsdale. Travelling the bride wore a navy blue velour coat, with kolinsky fur trimming and a small model hat to match.

Among the out-of-town guests were Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Butt, Depot Harbor; Mr. Frank Butt, of Chicago. and Mrs. J. Craig, sister of the groom, of Chicago.17 Mrs. William F. Markus, of Pembroke, was listed as the mother of the groom in the marriage of Ezra John Markus and Mary Roberta Hilliard on 5 April 1930.18

A quiet and charming autumn house wedding took place at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Markus, 403 Murray street, Pembroke, Wednesday evening, September 28, at 8.30. when Miss Edith Meron Markus became the bride of Mr. A. John Butt, of Emsdale, Ont., son of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Butt. of Depot Harbor. Rev. R. H. Waterman officiate . The marriage took place under an arch of autumn flowers which were mingled with bright autumn flowers. T

he bride was given in marriage by her father and was sweet in a poudre blue georgette. made with slashed tunic effect over beige, and wore grey shoes and hose. Her shower bouquet was of American Beauty roses and lily-of-the-valley. Mrs. Fred Crabtree, "Glenview," Todmorden, England. was the only attendant and was in a Mediterranean crepe romain. with diamante trimming and wore a corsage of ophelia roses. Mr. Bertram Markus, of Montreal. brother of the bride, was best man. Lohengrin's Wedding March was played by Miss Anna Meits.

A buffet supper was served to the guests and Mr. and Mrs. Butt left on the midnight train for Montreal. Toronto and Niagara, and will take up residence in Emsdale. Travelling the bride wore a navy blue velour coat, with kolinsky fur trimming and a small model hat to match.

Among the out-of-town guests were Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Butt, Depot Harbor; Mr. Frank Butt, of Chicago. and Mrs. J. Craig, sister of the groom, of Chicago.8
     He particpated in the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics, representing Canada in Fencing at the age of 32. He was in three events.9,10,7
