The following obituary appeared in the weekly newspaper the Lawrenceburg Press published in Lawrenceburg, Indiana 14 December 1934 :
Man Of True Worth Is Suddenly Called
James Sykes, Aged 60, Widely Known Resident of Bright Will Be Paid Last Tribute Today
The sudden death of James Sykes, age about 60, at his home in Bright Tuesday morning was quite a shock to his family and friends. Mr. Sykes had gone for a bucket of coal and was stricken in the yard and died within a few moments.
He had complained of not feeling well the night before, but arose the next morning at his usual hour and was giving attention to the fires when he was fatally stricken.
Mr. Sykes was a member of one of Dearborn county's oldest and largest families, being a lifelong resident. He was born in Miller township, one of nine children, four daughters and five sons. One sister, Mrs. Eva Haley of Bright and one brother, John L. Sykes of Lawrenceburg, are the only survivors. His parents were John and Julia Sykes and the date of his birth March 22, 1875. He was twice married, first to Miss Mabel Blasdel and after her death to Miss Flora Blasdel, with two children the issue of each union.
He is survived by his wife and three children, Mrs. Robert Grubbs, Robert and Earl Sykes, and ten grandchildren, all of Bright; one sister and one brother.
Mr. Sykes had conducted a blacksmith and machine shop at Bright for 40 years and was engaged in that occupation when suddenly called. He was a man of sturdy honesty and integrity and had the esteem of his fellowmen. He was a man of clean life, sober and discreet and eminently fair in all of his affairs of life.
Funeral and burial rites will take place at Bright this (Friday) afternoon at 2 o'clock.8

Mrs. Bonnie Grubbs Dies At Home in Bright
The death of Mrs. Bonnie Jeanette (Sykes) Grubbs occurred at her home at Bright, Tuesday at noon. She had been in failing health for several months.
She is survived by her husband, R. Grubbs; two children, Alice June, 9, and Sidney Allen, 7, and her own mother, Mrs. James Grubbs (sic.)
Last rites were conducted at the Bright Methodist Church Thursday afternoon. Burial in Gibson Cemetery, Moon, directors, in charge.
Bonnie Jeanette Sykes Grubbs, daughter of James and Flora Sykes, was born in Bright, Ind. July 17, 1912 and passed peacefully away April 28, 1942, at the age of 29 years, 9 months and 11 days.
She was married to Robert Grubbs February 20, 1932. To this union two children were born, Alice Jean and Sidney Allen, who with their father are left to mourn their loss.
Besides these she leaves a heart broken mother and two brothers, Robert and Earl, also uncles and aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins and a host of friends. Her father and sister preceded her in death.
Under the pastorate of Rev. Redmon she united with the Bright Methodist church January 11, 1925 and continued a faithful attendance until ill health prevented.
She has lived her entire life in this community. Was graduated from high school in the year 1930. While ill health prevented her from accomplishing many things that her ambitious nature craved, she was cheerful and appreciative of any kindness. She had been in failing health many years. All that loving hands and medical skill could do for her was done, yet, neath our eyes she faded slowly growing day by day more frail, bearing sweetly all her sufferings without murmur, moan or vail (sic).
Note: the last two lines are a quotation ending in "wail", not vail.
Card of Thanks
We wish to express our appreciation ot friends and relatives who assisted us in any way during the illness and death of our loved Bonnie Jeanette Sykes Grubbs.
Especially do we thank Rev. Housman, Moon Funeral Home, pallbearers, singers, donors of floral pieces and Bonnie's loyal friends during her illness.

NAB CINCINNATIAN IN SHOOTING CASE
Deputy Sheriff Accidentally Slain During Search.
Lawrenceburg, Ind., June 3 (AP)--Prosecutor Lester O. Baker said today a charge of assault with Intent to commit a felony has been filed against a man registered as William Ray Siler, 33, of Cincinnati, who was arrested in Cincinnati 24 hours after a shooting near Harrison and the subsequent accidental killing of Deputy Sheriff Robert Grubbs, 35.
Grubbs was killed last night while he and Sheriff Arthur Voit were searching for a man alleged to have shot Russel Scarborough, 47, of Cincinnati, near Harrison. Grubbs was handing a shotgun to the sheriff when It discharged accidentally.
Scarborough, being treated at a hospital in Cincinnati, refused to tell how he was shot, and Cincinnati Detective Chief Clem Merz quoted him as saying. "Ill finish the matter when I get out of this hospital."
Merz quoted Siler as saying that Scarborough threatened Mrs. Scarborough in a quarrel over money and fired at him when he went to her aid. Siler continued, Merz said, that he got his shotgun, returned and shot Scarborough, then hitch-hiked to Cincinnati. Merz added that Siler admitted serving a term in the Kentucky reformatory for transporting stolen goods.
Merz said Scarborough owned both a rooming house in Cincinnati and the farm where the shooting occurred. Siler, he said, was a tenant on a farm near St. Leon and also maintained residence at Scarborough's rooming house.
Siler waived extradition.13
