Obituary
Mary Hazel Sykes, daughter of Mrs. Bertha Johnson Sykes, was born in Logan township December 3rd, 1901. After a serious illness of eight weeks she quietly passed to the unknown land on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 5 p.m. at the home of her mother, aged 36 years, 9 months, 21 days.
Physically handicapped from birth, she was able by indomitable will power to attend public school to the eighth year work. Her intense love for music made it possible for her to while away many an hour at the organ and later at the piano. To hear a piece was to play it for pleasure to herself and friends. For several years she has been confined to a wheel chair but ever cheerful, always greeting friends with a smile and no complaint at not being able to enjoy life as others. A great sorrow came to her in the sudden loss, four years tomorrow, of the idolized stepfather, but her grief was carefully guarded to lesson (sic) the sorrow of others near.
She leaves to mourn her departure the mother, four sisters, a brother and many other relatives and friends.
The burdens heavy we must bear
And the eyes are dimmed with tears,
There'll be naught of sorrow over there
In the home of endless years.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Ernest Baily officiating. Mrs. Naomi Seers and daughter Maxine had the song service. Jackman and Bullock in charge of funeral, with burial on the family lot in Gibson cemetery.4
