The following obituary appeared in the weekly newspaper the Lawrenceburg Press published in Lawrenceburg, Indiana 8 July 1938:
Mrs. John Sykes, Who Has Long Been an Invalid, Fell Asleep Saturday at Her Home In Greendale
A final tribute of respect was paid Mrs. Clara Nowlin Sykes, beloved wife of Mr. John Sykes. In the funeral services conducted at the hone in Greendale Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock by Rev. C. D. Wilson, assisted by Rev. H. R. Page and Rev, E. E. McConnell, with ritual services by the Daughters of the American Revolution. Interment was in the family lot at Greendale Cemetery. Fitch, Bros. in charge of the burial.
Clara Nowlin, daughter of Jacob and Anne Eliza Nowlin, was born in Miller Township, Dearborn county, Indiana, on October 24, 1875 and died at her home in Greendale on July 2, 1938, at the age of 62 years, 8 months and 8 days.
At an early age she united with the Methodist Episcopal church at Bright, later transferring her membership to Hamline Chapel, Lawrenceburg. where she remained a faithful adherent throughout her life.
She was married to John L, Sykes at Kentland, Newton County, March 20 1901, and lived on a farm in that county until 1912 when she again became a resident of her native county, and lived in Greendale until her death, which by a strange coincidence occurred exactly 57 years after the death her father, whose funeral was held on Tuesday, July 5, 1881. To this union was born one son who died in infancy. After the loss of her own child, Mrs. Sykes with her husband gave devoted attention to other little ones, especially to Emma Forrester, whom they cherished and reared to young womanhood.
Her father having died when she was but five years of age. Clara was denied the companionship of this parent, always so greatly craved by a little girl. Living down through the years with a most devoted mother and sister greatly compensated for this loss. Her mother, Mrs. J. Z .Nowlin, died January 19, 1917, since which time the devotion and beautiful companionship existing between Clara and her sister, Ada contributed much to her own gratification.
Mrs. Sykes has been seriously afflicted for many years with a certain lack of muscicolous co-ordination, which caused much suffering, but through it all her kind and loving disposition always led her to show the deepest appreciation to her faithful husband, to her sister and to other members of the household who administered to her relief. She frequently told those who knew her best many beautiful stories relative to the devotion of her husband, and she took great pleasure in emphasizing how much his efforts meant to her.
Until her heaqlth began to fail, Mrs. Sykes was a faithful and devoted member of the Ladies Aid Society, the Women's Home Missionary, and the Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist church. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and took great interest in attending all meetings of an educational, historical, or social nature, as long as her health permitted. Mrs. Sykes became very ill Wednesday, June 9, and lapsed into a coma until the following Saturday afternoon when she passed peacefully into the arms of her Redeemer.
She leaves to mourn. her loss her husband, her sister, Miss Ada Nowlin, many cousins, and a host of faithful friends whom she grew to appreciate more and more as her life ebbed away.
Out of town relatives and friends attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs Evans and son Donald, Reilly, 0; Mr. and Mrs. Chester Boatman, Logansport, Ind; Mrs. Flora Dye, Kentland, Ind; Mrs. Ralph. Carbaugh, Brookston, Ind; Roscoe Boatman. Sheldon,Ill; Mr. and, Mrs. G.. C. Cole, daughter Georgia, Terre Haute; Mr. and, Mrs. Milton Taylor, Greensburg ; Roscoe Baker, Indianapolis; Mr. and Mrs. L. The following obituary appeared in the weekly newspaper the Lawrenceburg Press published in Lawrenceburg, Indiana 4 June 1943:
John L. Sykes, son of John and Julia Smith Sykes, was born in Harrison township, Dearborn county, Indiana, on June 9, 1870, and departed this life at his home on Ridge Ave., Greendale, Wednesday, May 26, 1943, at the age of 72 years and 11 months.
He was among the oldest of nine children, and was the last of his immediate family to go, his parents, and, all his brothers and sisters preceding him in death.
In 1901 he was united in marriage to Miss Clara Nowlin, The couple resided on a farm, near Sheldon, Ill., until 1912, when they moved to the present home in Greendale. Here Mrs, Sykes health began to fail, and her husband cared for her tenderly and devotedly through years of invalidism until her death.
In October 1940, he married Miss Ada L. Nowlin, and for two and half years enjoyed the happiness and tranquility he so richly deserved. Although in failing health, he attended to routine duties about the home, continued the management of his farm, and participated actively in church work.
The end came without warning on Wednesday as he finished his noon-day meal. Apparently as well as usual, he suddenly slumped in his chair, and, after a few minutes, breathed his last — quietly, painlessly. His passing was characteristic of his entire life; he accepted quietly and bore patiently the trials and sufferings of lite. When death came, he was ready, and submitted without a murmur to the call of his Master.
At an early age he united with the Christian church at Bright, later transferring his membership to the Christian Church at Lawrenceburg. He was a faithful, and consistent church worker, always doing his duty as he saw it -- quietly, and without, display. At the time of his death, and for many years previous he was a member of the Official Board of the church, and the church treasurer.
Left to mourn his death, are his widow, nephews, nieces, cousins, and a host of friends.
Mr. Sykes was a devoted husband, a kind neighbor, a never-failing friend. He lived a good Christian life, and died at peace with God and man. Of him, it may truly be said : "I have fought a good fight.. I have finished my course. I have the faith." (Timothy 4:7)
Funeral services were held at the home on Ridge Ave., Greendale, Rev. E. E.. McConnell of the Christian church officiating, assisted by Rev. C. T. Alexander of the Methodist church. Burial was in Greendale cemetery, Fitch Bros in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers were Lewis Jarrell, Ernest Conrad, Alfred Bentle, William Heitkamp, Leonard Bentle and Joe Elzy.6
