Colin Currie was buried on 8 July 1906 at West Nottawasaga Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Nottawasaga Twp., Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada.2,3
The following obituary appeared in the newspaper the Collingwood Bulletin, Ontario 5 July 1906:
Another of the remaining few of the early settlers of the Township of Nottawasaga, Mr. Colin Currie, passed away at Ferrysburg, Mich., on Thursday at the advanced age of four score years. Mr Currie came into the township with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Lachlan Currie, in 1848, coming from the Township of Mariposa, where they had spent six years, since emigrating from their native village of Invern, Argylshire, Scotland. At that time the township was but sparsely settled and Bowmore, now Duntroon, was the most important centre in the northern part of the country which today forms the counties of Simcoe and Grey. The parents of the subject of this sketch settled on the twelfth concession of the Township of Nottawasaga and with the indomitable will and courage characteristic of the sons of Auld Scotia, undertook to hew out of the dense forest a home for themselves and their family.
Shortly after Mr. Colin Currie left the farm home and turned his attention to sailing, finding employment as engineer on steamers sailing on the United States side of the great lakes. He followed his chosen occupation for twenty-seven years, during which he sailed on the steamer Niagara, which was burned with considerable loss of life in Lake Michigan in the fall of 1855; the Queen City; the Alpena, a passenger steamer which foundered about 1882 in Lake Michigan, carrying down about seventy people; the steamer Saginaw and the steamer Messenger, the latter being the last steamer on which he was employed.
Thirty years ago while home from the steamer Messenger, on a short visit, he was striken with paralysis. Although invalided by the stroke he was able to move about until six years later when he suffered a second stroke. From that time until his death he was as helpless as a child and during those many years his wife tenderly and fondly nursed him.
Mr. Currie was married in Chicago in 1872 to his wife, who, with one son, Colin Currie, engineer on the new lake steamer Charles Osborne, now mourn his death.
In politics Mr. Currie was a staunch Liberal and in religion a Presbyterian.
The remains were brought here on Friday and taken to the home of Mrs. Barr, Pine street, whence the funeral took place to West Church cemetery on Saturday afternoon. At the church and cemetery a large number of the old friends of the deceased gathered to pay the last tribute to one whom they respected. To the bereaved widow and son the sincere sympathy of the community is extended.3
