From The Comrades of Bert. Boland
Mrs. Thomas G. Boland of Eganville received on Saturday a letter from comrades-in-arms of her son, the late Bert. Y. Boland, whose death in action was recently announced, conveying sincere sympathy in the heavy bereavement. The writers are Renfrew young men who were chums and schoolmates of the fallen soldier in pre-war times here. The letter this runs:
France, August 17th, 1918
Dear Mrs. Boland.
Let us boys of Renfrew express in these few lines our greatest sympathy for you all in the loss of your son Bert. He made the supreme sacrifice on the afternoon of August 12th. Death was caused in the trenches by a German bullet, and he suffered no pain. Your son was one to be proud of indeed; his work that day and on many other occasions winning the admiration of his whole company. The boys held him as an example of all the sterling qualities of a soldier and a friend. In the face pf certain death he refused to take shelter and continued to fire his gun into the ranks of the enemy after it had been four times hit and his steel helmet penetrated. We, his "pals" in school and his comrades in ware, mourn the loss of our friend, but we know that such a passing is not death but shall reap the greatest reward. If there is anything we can do for you we shall be pleased to hear to that effect. Our address is practically the same as Bert's was. We are

Two More Eganville Boys Fall on Battlefield
Ptes. Boland and Tait Killed in Action
The gloom of death, stretching from Flanders fields, rests on two Eganville homes this week...Pte. Bert Y Boland, reported killed in action on August 13, was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Boland, of Eganville. He was three years with the colors and had been wounded and sent to a military hospital in England. He was known as a sharpshooter, and, when recovered, he had a choice of remaining in England as a training officer or returning to France as a sniper. Neither appealed to him, but he decided to rejoin his comrades of a machine gun crew. With them he fought and died. He was one of three brothers in ranks....9
