Is this the portrait of Mary Ann White drawn by the parson's daughter mentioned by George Patchett White?
She was born on 17 May 1791 at Ludborough, Lincolnshire, England, or North Somercoates according to the 1871 census.11,12,6,7,8,13,14,15 Mary married Michael White on 14 May 1812 at Lincolnshire, England. THey both signed with their mark. Mary White and William Brown were witnesses.16,17,18,19,20,13,14,21,22
Mary Ann Brown died before 21 November 1877 at Lincolnshire, England.23
Mary Ann Brown was buried on 21 November 1877 at St. Mary Parish, Ludborough, Lincolnshire, England.23
She was Baptised/Christened on 22 May 1791 at Ludborough, Lincolnshire, England. The Find My Past transcription of her baptism records that she was the "Illegitimate daughter of Mary & Geo Patchet."24,25,8,26
The following analysis is from my personal research and reflects my attempts to consolidate information from different sources.
All of our family records record Mary Ann's surname as Patchett, but her marriage record in the parish records uses Brown. Mary Ann was born several months before her parents married. Perhaps the family preferred to forget this sequence of events.27

Michael and Ann White appeared on the 1841 British Census Ludborough, at Lincolnshire, England, enumerated 6 June 1841, described as an Ag (agricultural) Labourer. Their children Elizabeth, George, Joseph, Maria and Mary were listed as living with them.13
Michael and Mary A. White appeared on the 1851 British Census of England, Ludborough, at Lincolnshire, enumerated effective 30 Mar 1851, described as an agricultural labourer occupying 5 acres of land. Their children Michael and Betsy were listed as living with them. As was Elizabeth Stephenson, a servant. What is the connection to the Stephenson family? Richard White of Ludborough had a son Stephenson, and several generations used Stephenson as a middle name.14
Michael and Ann M. White appeared on the 1861 British Census of England, Ludborough, at Lincolnshire, enumerated effective 07 Apr 1861, described as an agricultural labourer. As was their servant, Dinah Pickard.28,21
Mary A. appeared on the 1871 British Census of England, Lincolnshire, in the household of Michael and Rebecca White.29,30
The following biographical information appeared at the Autobiographical Sketches by George Herbert White, 1952:
Among my earliest memories is that of sitting on a hassock at the feet of my great-grandmother in a thatched cottage at Ludborough, my father's birthplace, six miles from Louth, Lincolnshire. The wonderful thing about her was that she had had 25 children, 18 of whom lived -- all single births. Mugs with their names on them stood on the mantelpiece, the living on one side of the clock and the dead on the other. With so many mouths to feed she had to bake the rye bread three weeks before they ate it. Her portrait had been drawn by the daughter of the Vicar, and I have a photograph of that drawing.

When the railway from Boston to Grimsby was built, it passed within about half a mile of her cottage, but she never went in a train: she though it would be "tempting Providence." Several of her sons emigrated to Canada, crossing "the big dyke" and nearly breaking her heart, but her last days were made more comfortable by remittances from overseas. I remember as a small boy walking in her funeral procession to the village churchyard, as was the country custom in those days.31

The following biographical information appeared at a letter containing her extensive family research, courtesy of Jean Rhiness nee Crosskill, January 2003:
...Her parents, George PATCHETT and Mary BROWN were married 01Nov1871 [s/b 1791- Rick] Ludborough, i.e., copy of Intent to marry and Bond, 5 months after Mary Ann, their oldest recorded child and daughter, was born.) Luckily Mary BROWN, unwed mother, didn't abort her 1st child, else none of the descendants of Michael WHITE and Mary Ann (BROWN?PATCHETT) would have been born! Actually Mary Ann, Michael WHITE's wife, was apparently never know by the PATCHETT name, except by her descendants, and may have been brought up by her maternal Grandparents, Wm. and Elizabeth (SMITH) BROWN in Ludborough.20

The following analysis is from my personal research and reflects my attempts to consolidate information from different sources.
In her 1924 letter, Mary Lizzie Wells nee White wrote "my great-grandfather, and your grandfather, was a farm-labourer earning only 10/- per week, on which they managed to bring up eighteen children (they had twenty-five altogether but seven died at birth). Each of the eighteen children had a little china mug with its name printed on, and as a child I remember how interested I used to be in reading the names, as the mugs stood in a row in the mantelpiece of the thatched cottage where they were all born"
I have often wondered about the phrasing of "(they had twenty-five altogether but seven died at birth)". At face value, this is possible, even if it seems impossible in our day and age.
However, the family has only passed on the names of 18 children, of whom 6 and possibly 7 died as very young children. They are: Helen (1814-1815), Martha (1819-1819), possibly Susan (1820 - ), Mary Ann (1826-1826), Charles (1828-1828), Jane (1833 - 1833) and Charlotte (1838 - 1838). If we include Susan, we have a record of 7 children that died early.
     Eighteen (18) plus seven (7) equals - you guessed it - twenty-five (25).
So, did Michael and Mary Ann have 25 children of whom 7 died, leaving 7 more unidentified children that lived longer than their infancy? Or, did they have 18 children in total, in which case we have a family record of all of their names?
Personally, I lean to the later possibility.
Wouldn't it be amazing to find even one of the nearly 200 year old mugs mentioned above?27

She was born on 3 July 1793 at North Somercotes, Lincolnshire, England.2,1,3,4 Alternatively, she may have been born circa 1794 at Somercotes, Lincolnshire, England, since she was age 77 in the 1871 census6; or, circa 1795 at North Somercotes, Lincolnshire, North Somercotes, Lincolnshire, England, since she was age 56 (my reading) in the 1851 census.7 Susanna married Robert Knight in 1815 at North Coates, Lincolnshire, England.8,9,7,4
Susanna Patchett died between 1 July 1878 and 30 September 1878 at Louth civil registration district, Lincolnshire, England.10
Her name was also recorded as Susannah Patchett.11,12,13 She was Baptised/Christened on 3 July 1793.14 She was Baptised/Christened on 5 July 1793 at North Somercotes, Lincolnshire, England.3,5
Robert and Susanna Patchett appeared on the 1841 British Census of Ludborough, at Lincolnshire, England, enumerated 6 June 1841, described as an ag. labourer. Their daughter, Susanna was listed as living with them.9
Robert and Susan Knight appeared on the 1851 British Census of England, Ludborough, at Lincolnshire, enumerated effective 30 Mar 1851, described as a shepherd.7
Robert and Susanna Knight appeared on the 1861 British Census of England, Ludborough, at Lincolnshire, enumerated effective 07 Apr 1861, described as a shepherd.4
Robert and Susan Night (sic) appeared on the 1871 British Census of England, Ludborough, at Lincolnshire, enumerated effective the night of 02 April 1871, described as parish paupers.6
The following analysis is from my personal research and reflects my attempts to consolidate information from different sources.
In his Autobiographical Sketches, the author identified his "great aunt" Knight as Susan White, daughter of Michael and Mary Ann. However, evidence shows that she was a generation older, a sister-in-law of Michael White mentioned above; and thus, his great-grandaunt
In first trying to find documentary evidence that the author was correct in identifying her as the daughter of Michael, I looked for census and parish records. I could not find evidence of a marriage to a Knight. In 1842, early family records showed that she married Henry Ward. I found parish records to verify they married in 1842, and a few months later, he died. There were no records to show that she remarried. Since she was born in 1820, and supposedly married to "Uncle Knight" for over 50 years, there should have been census records into the late 1800's.
Furthermore, I found it concerning that the early family record documented by Thomas Boothby White, older brother of Susan White and my great-grandfather, did not include her marriage to a Knight. It only included her marriage to Henry Ward.
Turning to the alternative candidate, I found that Susan Patchett was the younger sister of Mary Ann Brown, who was married to the aforementioned Michael White. Susan was married to Robert Knight and appears in census records from 1841 (the earliest census to name family members other than the head of the family) to 1871. In the later census, Robert and Susan were recorded as parish paupers, consistent with the author's recollections of their situation. In the 1841 census, there was a 9 year-old female in their household, Susanna White, who was presumably their daughter, pointing to a long standing marriage at that time.15
