C. P. R. EMPLOYE (sic) MET HORRIBLE DEATH
Wm S. McRoberts Struck by Engine and Cut in Twain Near Round House.
DEATH WAS INSTANTANEOUS.
Unfortunate Man Did not see or Hear Approach of Locomotive.
William S. McRoberts, employed as a carpenter on the bridge gand (sic) of the C. P. R, was cut in twain at 6 o'clock Thursday night while walking on the C. P. R. track opposite the coal chute, near the company's roundhouse. He was a single man and made his home with his parents in Kingsville. Death was instantaneous. The unfortunate man had just quit his day's work and was walking on the tracks, bearing some letters to his mechanical foreman, Thomas Millen. Engine No. 143 had just taken passenger train No. 5 into the station and was backing down the track to the round-house. In some unaccountable manner McRoberts did not see or hear the approach of the train. A freight train on another track in the near vicinity also helped to edtract (sic) his attention from the oncoming engine. The engine struck the man, throwing his body under the wheels, where it was dragged 100 feet before it was discovered. Coroner LaBelle was immediately notified and after viewing the remains and examining Engineer George Burr and Fireman Alexander Gressick, in charge of the locomotive at the time of the accident, deemed an inquest unnecessary. The body was removed to Tuson's morgue and was taken to Kingsville, where his father resides, Friday afternoon.4
