He was born on 31 March 1885 at Aberfeldy, Perthshire, Scotland.3
Duncan Dewar died between 2 June 1916 and 6 June 1916 at Belgium.4 He is remembered at Ypres, Belgium, on the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing.

     Introductory Overview:
Duncan Dewar of Asquith & Dunfermline is not included in the Asquith and District Honour Roll for WWI.
Family Background:
Duncan and his brothers, Sandy, Willie and Jessie, came to Saskatchewan in 1905 and 1906, initially settling in the Leroy area. Willie and Duncan then homesteaded in the Dunfermline district. Their elderly parents, Alexander and Elizabeth Dewar, with their remaining children, Jimmie and Kate, left Scotland in 1908, settling in the Dunfermline district where they homesteaded. Both Alexander/Sandy and Duncan, were carpenters who among other things, worked on the construction of the Canada Building in Saskatoon, which was built in 1913. Saskatchewan homestead records show that Duncan, John Duncan, Alexander and William Dewar all filed homesteads in township 37, range 8, 3rd Meridian West. Possibly Duncan and John Duncan are the same individual. Regarding his address, contemporary news items about his being missing and later presumed to have died all give Asquith as his address.5

Canadian Military Service - WWI

Duncan Dewar of Saskatoon began military service on 20 February 1915 at the age of 29 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, joining the 9th regiment, Canadian Mounted Rifles (C.M.R.) He was an unmarried carpenter, and had spent 3 years in the Scottish Horse. He was described as being 5' 7 3/4" with a fair complexion, blue eyes and fair hair. On his Attestation (enlistment) papers, he listed his next-of-kin/contact as his mother, Elizabeth Dewar of Asquith. He was assigned regimental number 114560.3
On 9 June 1915, He reported to Camp Sewell (later Camp Hughes), in Manitoba.6
On 23 November 1915, he sailed with his unit for England. On 3 Dec 1915 he reported to Bramshot camp. He landed in France on 29 Jan 1916, joining the 1st C.M.R.6
On 6 February 1916, at Havre, France, He was admitted to hospital with measles and was not discharged until 97 days later, on the 13 May 1916, when he left to rejoin his unit.7 Private Duncan Dewar was killed in action between 2 June 1916 and 5 June 1916 at West Flanders, Belgium. He was missing after action that took place from June 2nd to 5th, 1916 in the vicinity of Sanctuary Wood, about 2 miles east of Ypres. He was later presumed to have died "on or since" the former date. He was serving with the 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles
End of WWI Military Service section.3,8

He was included on a passenger manifest for the "Ionian" dated 20 July 1907 departing from Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, bound for the port of Québec. He gave his occupation as a farmer. Note that the 1911 census reports that he immigrated in 1906.9,10 He immigrated on 25 July 1907 to Port of Québec, Québec, Canada, He indicated he was a farm laborer and was going to Winnipeg.11
Duncan appeared in the 1911 Canadian Census of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, in the household ofAlexander Dewar, listed as a carpenter.10
