The startling news reached Eganville at six o'clock last evening that William Hartwick, a respected German farmer of the Township of Wilberforce, living four miles distant from Eganville, was killed by a falling pine. The circumstances surrounding this sad event are as follows: The unfortunate victim was making wood on his own premises - only about 200 hundred yards distant from his house. Three of his children were with him. A stunted pine was standing, and Hartwick decided to burn it down. He set fire to it, failing to note, however, that it was only a shell. He resumed his wood cutting, when, without warning, the burning pine crashed down upon him, striking him on the head and inflicting such injuries as to cause death 15 minutes later.10
