Asquith Cup
     VERLA FORSYTH (photo caption)
Clever 14-year-old Asquith student who has been awarded the coveted Lord Asquith Cup for this year. The cup represents general proficiency in her last year's work in Grade 8. Citizenship and home studies are taken into consideration in its award as well as the term tests and June examinations. In the latter Verla topped her fellow students with average marks of 91 per cent. In addition to being an excellent student she has done particularly well in music having passed her junior pianoforte examinations lust year with honors. Donated some years ago to the local children by the late Earl of Oxford and Asquith, tho cup is awarded annually to the most proficient student in Grades 7 to 12 and is yearly a source of keen competition among the students. It bears the inscription, "To the children of Asquith, Saskatchewan from H. H. Asquith, 1st. July 1922"

She won the cup again in the 10th grade.9,7

Sturdy Speaks at Asquith Service
ASQUITH
Empire Youth Sunday was observed in Asquith when representatives of the local and surreounding school districts, gathered at a mass service held in Memorial Hall at which J.H. Sturdy, secretary of the Saskatchewan Teachers' Federation, was special guest speaker. Harvey Summach was chairman, and Miss Verla Forsyth presided at the piano. The service was arranged and drafted by members of the Asquith Teachers' Local and a large attendance proved its popularity. Prayers were offered by Mr. Wardlow, student in charge of St. George's Anglican Church, and Scripture reading was given by Mrs. Crane of the Pentecostal Mission. The Asquith Company of Girl Guides, in uniform, formed a choir singing the anthem, and a duet was sung by Iris and Eileen Johnson. A. Rumbelow took charge of the musical part of the service. Speaking as a returned soldier who had seen service in the First Great War, Mr. Sturdy described the present conflict as amonstrous insult thrown in the face of the Prince of Peace. The only weapon to use against totalitarian ideolgies, he said, is education, for such things can only spread in an environment of ignorance.10

It becomes our painful duty this week to record the demise of Mrs. John Johnston of Kolapore, after an illness of only a few days. She was the daughter of the late T. B. White, whose sudden death a few years ago startled the whole community and filled it with regret.
Mrs. John Johnston was a woman of bright and cheerful disposition, tireless energy and complete forgetfulness of self when the sick were to be nursed or a friend needed her assistance. Many a sick room in the vicinity of her home will in the future ,miss her presence and ministering care. By her genial disposition she endeared herself to all who had the privilege of her acquaintance. Having had a great deal of sickness in her own family, it is no doubt greatly due to her own tireless nursing that she has been able, so far, to have kept the family circle complete.
There survive her, her mother, Mrs. T. B White of Collingwood, three sisters-Miss Myrtle White of Collingwood, Mrs. Wm. Johnston of Thornbury, and Mrs. Clifford Sine of Cobden;also five brothers-Messrs. T. B. White of Kolapore, George P. White of Idaho, Jas. L. White of Duncan, E. F. White of Cincinnati, Ohio, Robert H. White of Napinka, Man. and Bert White of Rochester, N.Y. She leaves, besides her sorrowing husband, 5 children,-Misses Sophia, Ethel, Mabel and Rhoda and Master Rob.
To the bereaved ones, we, in common with the whole community, extend our most sincere sympathy.. Hereinafter cited as Thornbury Herald and Grey Report.
