Canadian Military Service

     George Alexander McLaren was conscripted on 11 October 1917 at Renfrew, Horton Twp., Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada. He received his medical examination under the Military Service Act. He was called up Jan 3, 1918 in Kingston, Ontario. His enlistment papers show that he had scars from old burns on his right arm and left hip.2 He was killed in action on 30 August 1918 at France. His Circumstances of Casualty form notes that "Whilst with his Company in the assembly area, North East of Fontaine-lez-Croisilles, he was hit and almost instantly killed by shrapnel from an enemy shell."

George Alexander McLaren, elder son of Mr. and Mrs. R.A McLaren of Renfrew, reached his 21st year on August 20th of this year. He enlisted January 2, 1918, went to Kingston, and in the same month for overseas, landing at Liverpool on February 10th. On June 10th following he reached France. In August he entered the trenches. The last letter received from him was written August 20th. On August 30th he was killed in action. Harold, a brother, is in hospital wounded for the second time, and will probably not be in condition for further fighting.8

     Robert A. McLaren and Francis (sic) W. McLaren appeared on the 1921 Canadian Census of Renfrew, Renfrew County, Ontario, enumerated 13 June 1921, described as a bookkeeper for a flour mill. Their son Harold G. was listed as living with them.9
     Robert McLaren, of Renfrew, was the informant on the death registration of his brother-in-law, Robert Airth Jamieson, who died on 4 January 1923.22
     In the obituary of John B. McLaren who died 27 February 1929, his brother, Robert A. McLaren, of Renfrew, was listed as a survivor.17
     Robert Airth and Frances Wright McLaren appeared on the 1931 Canadian Census of Renfrew, Renfrew County, Ontario, enumerated 1 June 1931. Robert was described as a bookkeeper for a general store.3
     Robert Airth McLaren was the informant on the death registration of his wife, Francis (sic) Wright McLaren, who died on 3 June 1943.23
     In the obituary of Harold Gray McLaren who died 4 April 1966, his parents, Robert A. McLaren and Frances Jamieson were listed or implied as predeceased.24

Canadian Military Service - WWI

     William John McLaren of Renfrew, Ontario, R.R.#1 began military service on 7 December 1916 at the age of 17 ( but he altered his birth date to appear old enough to enlist) at Renfrew, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada, joining the 240th O/S Battalion, C.E.F.. He was a farmer. He was described as being 5' 11" and 151 lbs, with brown eyes, brown hair and a dark complexion. It was noted he had 7 moles on various body parts and a scar on his left hip. On his Attestation (enlistment) papers, he listed his next-of-kin/contact as his father, J. B. McLaren of Renfrew, Ontario, R.R.#1. He was assigned regimental number 1042526.1
     On 17 August 1918, at France, he received a gunshot wound to his right elbow.1
     On 10 June 1919, after being treated in several hospitals in France and England, he was invalided to Canada.1
     On 21 June 1919, at Portland, Cumberland County, Maine, USA, he arrived aboard the "Essequibo" and on the 22nd he was admitted to the Queens Military Hspital in Kingston, Ontario.1 Pte. William John McLaren ended his military service on 12 August 1919 at Kingston, Frontenac County, Ontario, Canada, he was struck off strength/discharged as medically unfit for further service due to his wound. He had served 4 months in Canada, 17 months in England and 7 months in France.

Canadian Military Service - WWI

     Alexander Campbell McLaren of Renfrew, Ontario, R.R.#1 began military service on 6 December 1916 at the age of 20 joining the 240th O/S Battalion, C.E.F.. He was a farmer, and he joined up a day before his youngest brother William. He was described as being 5' 6" and 139 lbs, with blue eyes, fair hair and a ruddy complexion. On his Attestation (enlistment) papers, he listed his next-of-kin/contact as his father, John B. McLaren of Renfrew, Ontario, R.R.#1. He was assigned regimental number 1042524.1
     On 16 November 1918, he was promoted to Lance Corporal.1 L/CPL Alexander Campbell McLaren ended military service as part of general demobilization on 19 March 1919 at Ottawa, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada,
End of Military Service section.1

     He was commonly known as Alex McLaren.3,7
     Alexander McLaren appeared on the 1901 Canadian Census of Horton Twp., Renfrew County, Ontario in the household of his parents, John and Elizabeth McLaren.6
     Alex C. McLaren appeared in the 1911 Canadian Census of Horton Twp., Renfrew County, Ontario in the household of his parents, John and Elizabeth McLaren.5 On 5 March 1917 at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, his unit sailed for Europe aboard the "S.S. Megantic", including his brother William on the same sailing.1
     On 18 January 1918, he went to France, joining the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry.1
     Alexander McLaren appeared in the 1921 Canadian Census of Horton Twp., Renfrew County, Ontario in the household of his parents, John and Elizabeth McLaren, and he was listed as a farmer's son on his father's farm.4
     In the obituary of John B. McLaren who died 27 February 1929, his son, Alex McLaren, of Renfrew, was listed as a survivor.3
     Alex and Evelyn Margaret Fraser appeared on the 1931 Canadian Census of Renfrew, Renfrew County, Ontario, enumerated 1 June 1930. Alex was described as a laborer in the general labor industry, and he was unemployed at the time of the census. Their children Alexander were listed as living with them.7
