The following obituary appeared in the weekly newspaper the Lawrenceburg Press published in Lawrenceburg, Indiana 1 January 1884:
Death of Jeremiah Nowlin - This community is called upon to mourn the loss of one of our oldest and most respected citizens - Mr. Nowlin, we understand, was born in Kentucky, but came to this county in his boyhood and resided in this immediate neighborhood ever since. He married Miss Pamelia Blasdel, daughter of Enoch Blasdel, and shortly after settled on the farm on which he died. Mr Nowlin started in the world a poor boy, but by industry and economy fortune, seemed to favor him, and he accumulated quite a large fortune, and left his now bereft wife and four sons in independent circumstances. Mr. Nowlin had not been well for some weeks, but still attended to business as usual until Sunday night, Dec 21st, he was taken worse, and on Monday morning, Dr. M.H.Harding was called, and everything that knowledge and skill could do was done until Friday, night, at half past eleven, he quietly and without a struggle, breathed his last . His disease as we understand was spinal affection together with a slight attack of paralysis and ending with congestion of the lungs. He was 67 years of age.
Few men would be more missed in this neighborhood than Mr. Nowlin; he was universally respected as an honest, upright man, attending strictly to his own business and never meddling with other men's affairs. He was a kind, good neighbor, sociable, benevolent and accommodating, and a good friend to the Poor. He was buried on Monday the 29th, in the Cambridge Cemetery. The funeral services were held at his sons, Ferris Nowlin's, whose house is the largest in the neighborhood to accommodate the people from the inclement weather. Rev. B. Plummer delivered a very appropriate discourse, Rev. H. Stackhouse assisting in the services. The beautiful casket was rich but plain. The pall bearers were Wm. H. Baker, Harrison Dawson, Chas. R. Campbell, Daniel Frazier, John Frazier, Robert H. Langdale, R.C. Jackson and James Liddle. At the close of the discourse the casket was placed and the arrangements made so that the hundreds of friends and neighbors could take a last look at the remains of a good and well tried friend, and few there were that passed without shedding tears. After which the multitude repaired to the cemetery and deposited the remains in the beautiful vault prepared to receive them. This, so far as this world is concerned is the last of Jeremiah Nowlin. A NEIGHBOR.15

She was born in 1927 or 1928.1,3 Mary married Albert Wortley before 6 July 1947 at Cottam United Church, Cottam, Essex County, Ontario, Canada. . Note that the account of their marriage was published in late July and refers to her mother as the "late Mrs. Johnston" and the related obituary iindicates Ethel died July 6th, 1947. So we infer that they wed after her death on July 6th. However, this obituary refers to Mary as Mrs. Albert Wortley, so the wedding occured before the 6th.
Perhaps the wedding occurred before Ethel's death, and the wedding article was anachronistic in reffering to her mother as deceasaed.1,2,4
