An Insane Case
The attention of Judge Nelson was occupied Monday with the trial of a case wherein J. B. Nowlin petitioned for the appointment of a conservator for his brother, E. B. Nowlin, alleged to be of unsound mind. The petitioner was represented by Attorney J. W. Redmond and the defendant by Attorney I. D. Walker. The defendant has been making his home in Custer county, Neb., where his family resides, but he has been living with his brother for the past six months. Mr. Walker set up the defense that Nowlin had been declared insane in Custer county, Neb., that a guardian had been appointed for him there and that as he was a resident of that county the local court had no jurisdiction in the matter. Judge Nelson after hearing evidence on this point decided that he had jurisdiction in the matter and proceeded to hear the petition for the appointment of a conservator. J. B. Nowlin testified that the defendant would sit for hours at a time without speaking and would answer all questions by shaking his head. If told to do anything he would obey much as a child would. Mr. Nowlin considered his brother unable to control his own business affairs. The jury returned a verdict that Nowlin was insane and the judge will appoint a conservator.17

Resolutions of Respect.
By Wm. Hayes Post No. 264, Dept of Nebraska, Grand Army of the Republic.
Always obedient to superior orders we the comrades of this Post humbly bow to the will of our Great Commander who on the 30th day of July 1896 ordered our beloved comrade Elijah B. Nowlin to report to the Headquarters of the blissful Beyond.
Comrade Nowlin was born at Lawrenceburg, Indiana, March 13, 1836. Enlisted as a private in Co. J, 2nd Illinois Cavalry, August 19, 1862 and served until June 29, 1865. Was at the battles of Bull Run, Blakely and many others of the hard-fought battles of the war and during all his service as a soldier, as well as during his life as a citizen, he was always ready to bravely and honorably discharge his whole duty. During the last few years of his life he was a helpless invalid patiently awaiting the final roll call.
Comrade Nowlin, by his blameless life as a soldier, citizen, husband and father endeared himself to all. In his death he leaves the tears of bereavement brightened by the earnestness of hope, and to us, especially; the departure loses much of its poignancy in a retrospect of his spotless Life as a defender of his country.
To his family we tender our condolence and sympathy. In his memory we will drape our charter in mourning for thirty days. It is ordered that a copy of these resolutions be furnished the COURiER and Tribune for publication and a copy sent to the family of the deceased.13

Herman Schoenfeldt died of appendicitis, as did his daughters Pearl and Esther. Esther was very attached to her father and didn't want to live when she knew he died. His death came as a complete surprise to everyone. He was apparently in good health until about ten days previous to his death when he had an appendicitis attack. Dr. Reeves of Eganville was summoned on Friday, March 28, 1919 and he was sent to the Cottage Hospital in Pembroke where that evening he underwent an operation. The operation was not successful and on Wednesday, April 5, 1919 (at 12.30) he passed away. He was a kind husband, a devoted father and a devoted Christian.8
Herman Schoenfeldtwas referenced in the biographical information that appeared about Pearl Caroline Wilhelmina Schoenfeldt on 5 September 2006 at the family tree of The family of Kenneth Powell & Susan Rees; viewed:Alice Krieger always calls Pearl - Pearlie. She said that Pearl was about five years old when she died of appendicitis. She was operated on at home and later passed away. Her sister Esther and her father Herman also died of appendicitis.9
