Will Johnston came as a young man to Collingwood Township where his brother John had. located on a farm near Ravenna. In 1882, he married Susan White, sister of Lizzie White Johnston. At this time he bought grain on the Thornbury market for Long Bros. of Collingwood.
About 1887 he formed a partnership with his brother-in-law, T. B. and James White, known as J. W. & Co. and for a short time operated a planing mill in Clarksburg. In 1889, this business was sold to Richard Carrol and. Will Johnston and T. B. White bought a sawmill outfit from Peter Stoutenburg at Kolapore. In 1890 their sawmill and hoop and stave factory began production. In 1891 John Johnston sold his farm and joined the firm J. W. & Co. Four years later Will Johnston moved to Heathcote where, in partnership with James White, they operated a lumber mill and cooperage, making staves and headings in conjunction with the Kolapore mill. Between the two mills they made the complete apple barrel.
In 1902 he severed his connection with J. W. & Co. and, moved, to Thornbury where he went into the coal and wood, business, which he operated for about twenty years. Later he was weighmaster at the local stock yard.
He took a prominent part in the work of the Methodist later United Church. He also served as councillor for several years.
