Father*Johann Gottfried Jurth2 b. c 1797, d. a 2 Apr 1871
Mother*Liese Bulkow2 b. c 1800, d. 29 Sep 1878

Last Edited6 Oct 2018
Johann Friedrich Jurt was possibly born on 11 April 1835 in Drachhausen, Cottbus, Brandenburg, Prussia/Preußen (modern Germany)G.3 Alternatively, he was born circa 1834 in GermanyG since he gave his age as 47 in 1881 census4 or circa 1836 in Freidland ? Frankfort oder, Prussia/Preußen (modern Germany), according to his marriage registration.5 Alternatively, he was born circa 1831 in GermanyG since he was age 40 in the 1871 census but ages were often rounded to the nearest 5 years in early census records.2 Johann married Auguste Fredericka Emile Berger on 17 December 1865 in Renfrew County, Ontario, CanadaG.6,5,7,2,4 He died before 31 March 1901 since his wife was enumerated as a widow in the census.8
Johann Friedrich Jurt immigrated in 1862 to CanadaG from Brandenburg Prussia.9
Johann Friedrich Jurt was a Dienstknecht (Service farmhand) in 1862.9
Reference. [According to Appendix B page 297 in "Harvest of Stones" Yurt may be a Wendish name. Wends were a small Slavic group from "a vaguely defined area in southeastern Germany, approximately fifty miles southeast of Berlin." It further notes "The Wends understand only a little German, though they are all Evangelical Lutheran."]10

Census Data

Frederick Gurt and Augusta appeared on the 1871 Canadian Census of Algona Twp., Renfrew County, Ontario, enumerated 2 April 1871. Frederick was enumerated as a Farmer and an Evangelical. Their children Frederick, Anna and William were listed as living with them. As were his parents, Gotlip Gurt and Elisabeth Gurt.2
Frederick Ewit and Augusta appeared on the 1881 Canadian Census of Raglan & Radcliffe Twps., Renfrew County, Ontario, enumerated 4 April 1881. Frederick was enumerated as a W Meth(odist) and a Farmer. I believe this is the Jurt/Yourt family because: 1) all family names and estimated years of birth except Eliz/Louisa are correct, 2) Frederick and Augusta were born in Germany, 3) phonetically "Ewit" sounds right (English enumerators probably had problems with German names). Their children Frederick, Anne and Eliza were listed as living with them.4
Frederick Yurt and Augusta appeared on the 1891 Canadian Census of Raglan & Radcliffe Twps., Renfrew County, Ontario, enumerated 6 April 1891. Frederick was enumerated as an Evangelical. Their children Frederick, Annie and Louisie were listed as living with them. As were their granddaughters (Annie's daughters), Emma Doerny and Rosanna Yurt. Note that Annie's daughter Esther is not enumerated which might support the 1891 birth date, if other primary documents did not give the 1890 date.7 Frederick was enumerated near the household of Mary Sumach so we can probably assume they were neighbours.11
