ASQUITH--The funeral of the late Mrs. Mary Francis Picketts; 46, who died at her home last Sunday afternoon, was held Tuesday in the United Church, Rev. E. Crossley officiating. A large gathering paid their last respects. Mrs. Patterson, of Saskatoon, an old friend, sang a solo. Deceased is survived by her husband. F. A. Picketts, four sons, Harold, Ford, Cleve, and Lloyd, two daughters, Marjorie and Pearl, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hyde, of Summas, Washington, and four brothers, William, John, and Harry, of Rosile, Man., Arthur of Floral, Sask., and three sisters, Mrs. Style, Mrs. Anderson, and Mrs. McPhail, of Summas. Interment was made In the Asquith cemetery. The pall-bearers were: Russell Badger, A. T. Calder, Steve Annable, John Bowles, Louis Laventure and Roy Warren.4

Mr. McFadyen was a veteran of the First Great War and had suffered poor health for some time, The funeral service was in charge of the Canadian Legion branch.
Word was received the same day, advising the family of the sudden death of another half brother, the late J. E. (Ted) Fawcett at the West Coast The late Mr. McFadyen and Mr. Fawcett were half brothers and were well known here where they were born and had lived until manhood. Mr. Fawcett went to the Coast about a year ago hoping that the change of climate might improve his health. Burial will be made from his home there.3

Robert A. Fawcett, a widower with 5 sons married Mary McFadyen née Bready, a widow from Juniata. She also had 5 sons. They initially lived at her homestead and then moved to his homestad in the Eagle Creek area. Of these 10 sons, David Fawcett, Roy, Wilber and Earl McFadyen all served in WWI. Only Wilber was not wounded during the conflict.10
David Earl Walker Fawcett of Springwater began military service on 24 March 1916 at the age of 22 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, joining the 96th Battalion, Canadian Highlanders. He was an unmarried farmer with no previous mililtary experience. His enlistment was noted in a Star Phoenix article on March 25th listing 10 men who had joined the 96th Battaltion the previous day. He was described as being 5' 8" with black hair, hazel eyes and a dark complexion. On his Attestation (enlistment) papers, he listed his next-of-kin/contact as his father, Robert Alexander Fawcett of Asquith Post Office. He was assigned regimental number 204544.4,11
On 26 September 1916, at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, embarked with his unit on "S.S. Laconia," arriving in Liverpool 06 Oct 1916. On 13 Nov 1916 he joined the 13th Battalion, Canadian Infantry in France. On 25 Feb 1917 he was promoted in the field to Lance Corporal.4 L/Cpl. David Earl Fawcett ended his military service on 17 July 1918 at Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, when he was demobilized after being wounded with a gunshot to his left hip on 9 Aug 1917 and he was no longer fit for military service. He was left with impaired use of his left leg. He was inavlided home and sailed from Avonmouth on 25 May 1918 aboard the "H.S. Araguaya". Upon his return to Canada he was at the Saskatchewan Military Hospital in Moose Jaw. He had served nine months in France with the 13th Battalion. Upon his discharge he returned to Asquith.
In 1907,David moved from Manitoba to Asquith, RM of Loganton, Saskatchewan, Canada. Two years later he moved to his homestead at Springwater.6

Upon his return to Canada he was at the Saskatchewan Military Hospital in Moose Jaw. He had served nine months in France with the 13th Battalion. Upon his discharge he returned to Asquith.
