An Insane Case
The attention of Judge Nelson was occupied Monday with the trial of a case wherein J. B. Nowlin petitioned for the appointment of a conservator for his brother, E. B. Nowlin, alleged to be of unsound mind. The petitioner was represented by Attorney J. W. Redmond and the defendant by Attorney I. D. Walker. The defendant has been making his home in Custer county, Neb., where his family resides, but he has been living with his brother for the past six months. Mr. Walker set up the defense that Nowlin had been declared insane in Custer county, Neb., that a guardian had been appointed for him there and that as he was a resident of that county the local court had no jurisdiction in the matter. Judge Nelson after hearing evidence on this point decided that he had jurisdiction in the matter and proceeded to hear the petition for the appointment of a conservator. J. B. Nowlin testified that the defendant would sit for hours at a time without speaking and would answer all questions by shaking his head. If told to do anything he would obey much as a child would. Mr. Nowlin considered his brother unable to control his own business affairs. The jury returned a verdict that Nowlin was insane and the judge will appoint a conservator.30

The following obituary appeared in the newspaper the Decatur Daily Republican published in Decatur, Illinois 19 December 1896:
Funeral of Mrs. Nowlin
Burial Near the Blue Ridge Church - The Services
The funeral of Mrs. Jane S. Nowlin, wife of J. B. Nowlin, of West King street, this city, who died at the home of her son, Cortez Nowlin, in Austin township, on Dec. 16, after a week's illness, took place this afternoon from the Blue Ridge church, in Austin township, Rev. Z. T. Hatfield of the U.B. church, officiating.
It was on Dec. 9 that the daughter of the deceased, Mrs. Clarence F. Emery, was called from this life, and the anxious care during her daughter's sickness and the terrible blow inflicted at her death, was more than Mrs. Nowlin could bear. She was unable to leave the house at the time of her daughter's funeral last Saturday, and was taken to the home of her son, and was given the best of care and medical attention, but she gradually grew weaker until her spirit took its flight.
Miss Jane Sykes was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, where her early life was spent. She moved with her parents o Dearborn county, Indiana, and there became acquainted with Jonathan B. Nowlin, to whom she was united in marriage, August 30, 1862. Shortly afterwards Mr. Nowlin joined the Union army and fought through the civil war. In March, 1867, the family moved to Morgan county, Illinois, where they resided until March, 1874, when they moved to Austin township, Macon county. Here they bought a farm and resided until a short time ago when they moved to Decatur. They retired from the farm last spring and in May started on an overland trip in a buggy to Indiana and Ohio to visit the scenes of their younger days. They remained about four months, and both Mr. and Mrs. Nowlin were of the opinion that the trip was beneficial to them. After visiting among their children a few weeks they moved to Decatur and were just becoming settled in their new home when it was broken by death. Mrs. Nowlin was a devoted wife and mother and her life was pure and upright.
She had long been a consistent member of the United Brethren church. Mrs. Nowlin was the mother of nine children, five of whom, with a sorrowing husband, are lefty to mourn her death.3

At the residence of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Rau, in Austin township, on Wednesday, February 22, occurred the marriage of Miss Emma J. Rau and J. A. Nowlin. Miss Flora james of Farmer City acted as bridesmaid and Robert L. Morris of Maroa as groomsman. The ceremony was performed by Rev. ZS. T. Hatfield of this city. A sumptous wedding dinner was served, after which the couple left for Chiccago for a short visit. They received a large number of handsome and useful gifts. The guests from a distance were Miss Lizzie Watts of Springfield, the groom's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Nowlin, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis James and the Misses Katie and Flora James, all of Farmer City.15

Jont and Silas were enumerated as neighbouring households in the 1900 census. Christian and Ida Rau were enumerated on the same page. However, Christian's parents were from Germany, while Silas' wife Pearl's parents were from Illinois and Missouri, respectively. Jont's wife's parents were also from Illinois and Missouri. Is there a relationship between the above wives, and Christian Rau?16

The case was filed last March against Dr. Nowlin, charging him with practising medicine wihtout a license, one case being mentioned specifically in the declarationa dn others referred to in a general way. State's Attorney V. F. Brown brought the prosecution on the order of the state board of health byt after examining a few witnesses it was evident that he had been misinformed concerning the case and so stated to the court, no evidence being brought out to sustain the declaration.

In the opening statements to the jury it was stated that Dr. Nowlin had treated patients with drugs and had practised surgery contrary to treatment allowed under the state laws. Attorney L. R. Herrick in his opening remarks stated that it was a case brought for spite growing out of the quarrel that is on between the allopaths and homeopaths against the doctors of the osteopath schools. That there are no osteopaths on the state board of health and that the suit was merrely for the purpose of driving his client out of business. Dr, Nowlin was graduated from the Still College of Ostepathy at Des Moines in 1903, has licenses to practise in California, Michigan and Illinois and for nearly eight years has been practicing in Farmer City.

Philip Holloway was put on the stand and stated that Dr. Nowlin had been called to adminsiter to him but that he had administered no medicine nor practiced any surgery. the surgical work having been done with a razor by a friend. The other witnesses could not recall any surgical or medical treatment. The absence of any evidence made it unnecessary for Attorney Herrick to produce a witness or the license or diploma of the doctor, and only the first witness was cross-examined by the defense. When seen after the verdict the doctor pleaded that he had been vindicated and he stated that he hoped that this would be the end of the fight of the old schools on osteopathy.17

Dr. Jont A. Nowlin was referenced in the engagement announcement of an unknown person on 10 December 1925 at the newspaper the at Decatur Herald; Announce Engagement
The engagement and approaching marriage of Dr. Owen W. E. Nowlin, of Farmer City, ot Miss Anna Margaret Carson, of Belleflower, was made recently by the bride's parents. Mr. and Mrs. G. M. Carson. The date of the wedding has not been made known.

Dr. Nowlin is the son of Dr. Jont A. Nowlin who has been an osteopathic physician in Farmer City for more than 18 years. He is a graduate of the University of Illinois receiving a bachelor of science degree from that college and also graduated from the Physicians' and Surgeons' college of Chicago receiving his M.D. degree there. He has spent the past two years as an interne (sic) in the California hospital located at Los Angeles, Cal.

Miss Carson comes from a very prominent family in Belle flower. She is also a graduate of the U. of I. with the class of 1922.

The couple will probably locate in California following the wedding.18
The following obituary appeared in the newspaper the Farmer City Journal published in Farmer City, Illinois 20 August 1928:
Dr. J. A. Nowlin, pioneer osteopathic physician is dead. He passed away Tuesday afternoon, August 14, 1928 in a sanitarium in Battle Creek, Michigan. He had been in failing health for several years. A few weeks ago he went to Chicago Osteopathic Hospital for treatment and later was removed to Battle Creek. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at the M. E. Church with burial at Maple Grove cemetery.

Dr. Nowlin was born July 18, 1878 in Macon County IL, the s/o Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Nowlin. He attended country schools and later graduated from the Still College of Osteopathy in Des Moines IA. He married Emma Rau of Maroa on February 22, 1899. Two years later they moved to Farmer City. Besides his wife, Dr. Nowlin leaves two sons: Dr. Owen W. E. Nowlin (1900-1973), who with his wife and baby daughter have recently come to Farmer City to make their home; and Dr. Wilfred Nowlin (1902-1960) of Des Moines. Both sons are graduates of Medical College and school of Osteopoathy. Dr. Nowlin also leaves his father, nearly ninety years of age; two brothers: C. D. Nowlin of Maroa; and S. R. Nowlin of Decatur; and two sisters: Mrs. A. G. Currie of Holdridge, NE; and Mrs. Emma Applegate of Farmer City.

Mrs. Nowlin and the two sons were at his bedside at the end. They reached home late Tuesday night. Harlow and Lester Stensel left with the ambulance at 5:30 Tuesday afternoon for Battle Creek and returned with the body at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Dr. Nowlin came to Farmer City when there were no pavements, no automobiles, no modern stores or office building. His delight was to see Farmer City grow. He was interested in the social welfare of the town as well as its civic upbuilding. He never met a stranger and was always ready for the humorous side of life. He is one who will be missed by the entire town and surrounding communities and heartfelt sympathy is extended to the bereaved.

Dr. Nowlin had told several friends a short time before he became ill that just as soon as his son, Owen, returned from California he expected to retire and turn over his practice to his son. He, however, waited too long and continued coming to his office even though he was seriously ill at the time and did not give up until he just had to. Farmer City has lost a good citizen, the community a good doctor and the home a kind and loving husband and father.
