Interestingly, August's signature shows that he wrote his surname with an S, overwritten by a Z, or vice versa. This demonstrates the fluid nature of their spelling of their surname.14
Mary appeared on the 1916 Census of Canadian Prairie Provinces, RM of Loganton, Saskatchewan, in the household of August Summack and Minnie Summack, listed as a cook.3
Saml and Mary Henderson appeared on the 1921 Canadian Census of Regina, Saskatchewan, enumerated 1 June 1921. Saml was described as a fireman. The Nature of Work column may read "City Fire Dept." There were also 7 boarders listed in their household.15

In the obituary of Martha Magdalena Ristau who died 11 February 1924, her sister, Mrs. S. Henderson was listed as a survivor.17

On Dominion Day (July 1) in 1931, August and Minnie Summach hosted a reunion of local families in which at least one of the parents had attended Rosenthal school in Renfrew County, Ontario. A photographer from Saskatoon took a panoramic photograph of about 14 families and other guests.16,17

However, the Saskatoon Woodlawn cemetery index shows they died several years apart. Since Tillie died in January, I assume she was killed in the accident, and Rueben survived.27

She was born circa November 1809 based upon her age of 67 years 2 months at the time of her death.5 Alternatively, she may have been born circa 1810 at Yorkshire, England, according to early family records and her obituary1,4; or, circa 1811 at England iaccording to their mmigration record at the port of Alexandria, VA.6 Alternatively, she may have been born circa 1812 at England in early census records.7,8 Elizabeth married John Sykes on 15 October 1830 at Dearborn County, Indiana, USA.1,9,10

She immigrated with her parents, Thomas Langdale and Elizabeth Langdale between 1 April 1828 and 30 June 1828 to Alexandria, Alexandria County, Virginia, USA, left England from Liverpool, arriving at the port of Alexandria, VA on board the Pioneer under ships master, Leonard Marberg or possibly Marbury.14
Elizabeth Sikes appeared on the 1850 U.S. Federal Census of Miller Twp., Dearborn County, Indiana, in the household of Thomas Langdall.7
Elizabeth Sykes appeared on the 1860 U.S. Federal Census of Miller Twp., Dearborn County, Indiana, enumerated 17 July 1860, described as the head of the household. Her children: John, Thos., Henry and Jane, were listed as living with her.8
The following obituary appeared in the newspaper the Decatur Weekly Republican published in Decatur, Illinois 25 January 1877:
Died
At the residence of her son-in-law J. B. Nowlin, in Austin township, on Sunday Jan. 21, 1877. Mrs. Elizabeth Sykes, aged 67 years.
Mrs. Sykes, whose maiden name was Elizabeth Langdale was born in Yorkshire, England and at the age of fourteen emigrated with her parents to this county, and settled in Dearborn county Indiana. At the age of nineteen she was married to John Sykes, of Cincinnati, Ohio, where she resided until 1849, when her husband dying of cholera, she returned to Dearborn County, and remained there until 1867, since which time she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Nowlin. Mrs. Sykes was the mother of eleven children, three only of whom (two sons and one daughter) survive her. The funeral services were held at the Methodist Chapel on Tuesday, attended by a large number of the neighbors and friends; and after listening to a very impressive discourse by the pastor, the remains were interred in the cemetery adjoining.13

The following obituary appeared in the weekly newspaper the Lawrenceburg Press published in Lawrenceburg, Indiana 1 February 1877:

She was a most excellent woman. She was a sister to Robert and Thomas Langdale of this vicinity.
NOTE: At some point in time a transcription error was made in passing down the Langdale Family tree since Phylis Sine's copy gives her date of death as June 21, not Jan 21.15

In the obituary of Jane E Nowlin who died 15 December 1896 or 16 December 1896, her mother, Elizabeth Sykes was listed as predeceased.16

Willie Ristau 1918
WWI 1918 - William Risto, Henry Kuehl and Henry Zummach
He was born on 24 October 1895 at Killaloe, Hagarty Twp., Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada.7,4,8,5,6 William married Jane Ann Ritchie on 7 November 1922 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.9
William Frederick Ristau died on 15 September 1951, at his home at 923 6th Street east, at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, at age 55.10,9,11,12
The following selected information is extracted from the obituary of William Frederick Risteau.
William Frederick Ristau was buried on 18 September 1951 at Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.13,11
     Asquith and District Honour Roll:
     "Ristau, William" of Asquith.
Family Background:
After WWI, his parents, William and Mary Rose (Zummach) Ristau came from Ontario to settle in the Avondale district. William was born in Germany and came to what would become Renfrew County, Ontario in June 1861 with his parents and siblings. Mary Rose or Mary Rosa was born in Renfrew County, and they married in 1882. William died in 1923 and Mary Rosa returned to Killaloe, Ontario in about 1941 to live with her daughter's family. She died in 1946.
Other comments:
"Willie" was a 1st cousin of Fred and August Summach, of Avondale, as well as being August's brother-in-law. As early as 1916 he was working for August in the Avondale district. He may have returned to Ontario for the winter months. William remained in the West after the war, residing in the Asquith area until about 1940 when he moved to Saskatoon. He became a city employee. He also served in the Navy during the Second World War.14
Canadian Military Service - WWI

William Frederick Ristau of Asquith was conscripted on 6 June 1918 at Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, joining the 1st Depot Battalion, Saskatchewan Regiment. He was a single farmer in the Asquith area.
Note that in his service file, his surname is usually given as "Ristan," often written or printed in a clear hand. This may have been because of the ambiguity of the trailing "u" which could have been seen as an "n" in his signature. Once it got into the system, maybe it was too hard to correct. He was described as being 5' 10" with "gray" eyes, brown hair and a medium complexion. On his conscription papers he listed his next-of-kin as his father, William Ristau Sr. of Killaloe, Ontario. He was assigned regimental number 277101.4,11
On 28 July 1918, at Montréal, Québec, Canada, he embarked for England on the "H.M.T. Cassandra," arriving in Liverpool on 15 Aug 1918. Willie was hospitalized with influenza on 02 Oct 1918 for 20 days in No. 12 Canada General Hospital, Bramshott, England. He was one of the lucky ones that survived. On June 13, 1919 he was transferred to the Canadian Forestry Corps base at Sunningdale.4 Pte. Willie Frederick Ristan (sic) ended military service as part of general demobilization on 16 July 1919 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, after service in England with the Canadian Forestry Corps (C.F.C.) After discharge he intended to return to Asquith.
End of WWI Military Service section.4

William resumed military service in 1941 and served in the RCAF.11 William Frederick Ristau ended his military service in 1945

John Kuehl appeared in the 1911 Canadian Census of Hagarty Twp., Renfrew County, Ontario in the household of his parents, August and Many or Mary Kuehl, and he was listed as a farm laburer.5 John Kühl, the groom's cousin, was listed as a witness to the marriage of August Zummach and MInnie Ristau on 30 January 1912; I presume that John Kuhl was his cousin John, the son of August Kuhl/Kuehl and Minnie Gienow. Interestingly, August's signature shows that he wrote his surname with an S, overwritten by a Z, or vice versa. This demonstrates the fluid nature of their spelling of their surname.14

He was born on 9 February 1892 at Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada.3,4 Alternatively, he may have been born circa 1893 at Ontario, Canada, according to the 1921 census.5 Reuben married Matilda Augusta Ristau before 1 June 1921.6,2
Reuben Francis Briscoe died on 2 September 1975 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, at age 83.6,7,3
The following selected information is extracted from the obituary of Reuben Francis Briscoe.
Survivor(s): Joy Horner and John Horner. Predeceased by his wife, Tillie Briscoe.3

Reuben Francis Briscoe was buried on 6 September 1975 at Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.2,3
His name was recorded as Reuben Francis Brisco on his birth registration.4,5
He appeared on the 1916 Census of Canadian Prairie Provinces Saskatchewan in the household of his parents, Brien and Rachel Victoria Brisco.8
Reuben Francis and Tillie Brisco appeared on the 1921 Canadian Census of RM of King George No. 256, Saskatchewan, enumerated 1 June 1921. Reuben was described as a farmer.5
The following article appeared in the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Star-Phoenix, 7 July 1930 :
Job Seeker Leaves Booze fo Foreman
With jobs hard to get, people are apparently going to considerable lengths to get on a payroll. Several cases of attempts to bribe foremen in charge of city work have been reported to George D. Archibald, city engineer. In one instance a bottle of booze and a box of cigarets (sic) were left on the back steps of a foreman's home while he was downtown to attend a talkie. This foreman was R. Briscoe, in charge of semi-macadam roadway construction. Mr. Briscoe doesn't drink liquor in any form, and the quart bottle is still intact.9

Reuben Briscoe and family attended the Rosenthal School Pals Reunion.
On Dominion Day (July 1) in 1931, August and Minnie Summach hosted a reunion of local families in which at least one of the parents had attended Rosenthal school in Renfrew County, Ontario. A photographer from Saskatoon took a panoramic photograph of about 14 families and other guests.10,11

In the obituary of Theodore Francis Briscoe who died 3 May 1942, his father, referred to as Mr. R. Briscoe, R Briscoe was listed as a survivor.12 He was listed as the father of the bride in the marriage of Albert Ralph Horner and Eva Joy Briscoe on 12 July 1944.13
According to Peter Smith, Rueben and Tillie were killed in a car accident. They pulled to the side of the road during a snowstorm and were hit. However, the Saskatoon Woodlawn cemetery index shows they died several years apart. Since Tillie died in January, I assume she was killed in the accident, and Rueben survived.14
In the obituary of Matilda Augusta Briscoe who died 5 January 1971, his husband, Reuben Briscoe, was listed as a survivor.15
See the footnotes below for a link to his obituary that appeared in the newspaper the Star-Phoenix published in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, 3 September 1975.3
In the obituary of Joy Horner who died 7 December 2003, his father, Reuben Briscoe, was listed as predeceased.16

He was born in 1809 at Ross County, Ohio, USA. However, the 1880 census for his son James shows that both of James' parents were born in England.6,7 John married Elizabeth Langdon on 15 October 1830 at Dearborn County, Indiana, USA.8,9,4
     John Sykes died circa 1849.10,5
In the obituary of Elizabeth Langdale who died 21 January 1877, her husband, John Sykes was listed as predeceased.11
In the obituary of Jane E Nowlin who died 15 December 1896 or 16 December 1896, her father, John Sykes was listed as predeceased.12
     Research notes:
Sykes-Langdon Family thread by Phyllis Wright (Jan 31, 2001 then editted on 24 Mar 2001)
John Sykes Married Elizabeth Langdon Oct. 15, 1830 in Dearborn Co. Who were their parents? Son James was apprentice tinsmith at Lawrenceburg in 1850. Marr. at Shelbyville 1855 to Emerine Goodrich, granddaughter of Susan Wetzel who was dau of Capt.John Wetzel of Marshall co. WV. James had several siblings who went to Iowa. Where did father and mother die? Was Elizabeth of the Cinci. Langdon's who came from Vt?
     ---------------------------------
My response (21 Jul 2001):According to an obituary posted by Dawna Fassler, Elizabeth Langdale was married to John Sykes of Cincinnatti. It also states that they were married when she was 19. Since she was born in 1810 she would have been married in 1829-30. I have speculated that the John Sykes-Elizabeth Langdon marriage recorded in the Indiana marriage index was a typo and referred to Elizabeth Langdale. Can anyone prove this or disprove this?
Analysis: Need more research, but this would preclude Elizabeth Langdon from being "our" Elizabeth Langdale. She had a son John, but not James.
     ---------------------------------
My note: From the obituary for Elizabeth states. She married John Sykes of Cincinnati. In 1849 she returned to Dearborn County as John was dying of cholera.
     ----------------------------------
Phyllis Wright responded on 24 Mar 2002:
John Sykes, my gggrandfather was marr Oct.9,1830 to Elizabeth Landdon (sic), (Langdale) in Dearborn co., In. I have found something with Langdale on it in family papers but cannot remember just where right now as after finding marr. cert in Dearborn co. dismissed the Langdale spelling. I was looking in Ross Co. Oh as my ggrandfather James Sykes death cert at Shelbyville, In. stated he was born in Ross. There are many Sykes in Ross Co but could not make the connection. Believe John goes back to John Sykes(Six) of Green Co Pa.1770-1800 who was in Rev. Have a list of his children. Wife was a Bonnett, a sister of Capt. John Wetzel's wife Mary. Their dau Susannah marr. Nathanial Goodrich and died in Shelby co. In. Granddaughter Emerine Goodrich marr. James Sykes, son of John. James an apprentice tinsmith at Lawrenceburg for some reason visited Shelbyville & marr. Emerine. Belive he was visiting relatives. Have found no land records in Dearborn Co for John. John Sykes could have lived on Ky side of river as some of the Wetzel family did that before Jacob blazed Wetzel trace from Brookville in 1819. Are you related/ Do you have any info on family that you could share?
     ----------------------------------
My response: Dawna Fassler posted Elizabeth Sykes' obituary on the Dearborn message board. It says in part: "At the age of nineteen she was married to John Sykes, of Cincinnati, Ohio, where she resided until 1849, when her husband dying of cholera, she returned to Dearborn County" This Elizabeth (Langdale) Sykes had a daughter Jane Elizabeth who married Jonathan Blasdel Nowlin. A fellow researcher has found the following in the 1850 Indiana census: Elizabeth Langdall (not Sykes) with children John Tikes (could it be Sikes/Sykes?) Langdall, Henry Langdall and Jane Elizabeth Langdall. I am assuming the census recorded this as a Langdall/Langdale family, rather than a Sykes family. Note there is no James, but then if he was apprenticed, he would may not have been living with his family. It is encouraging that you remember papers with the Langdale name. We could be kin.13
