The 1901 census appears to indicate he was born Jan. 11, 1896, but it also gives his age as 15. The way the enumerator formed the number "8" could be mistaken as a "9." The 1886 birth year is consistent with the 1911 census.5

Personal News of the Capital
A pretty but quiet wedding took place in Bell Street Methodist Church on Sept. 4 at 8:30 o'clock when Miss Vera May Wainman, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Wainman, of 733 Cooper street, was united in marriage to Mr. E. Mayhew, of Renfrew, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. Mayhew, Renfrew. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. G. S. Clendinnen. Palms and pink and white asters were effectively used in decorating the church. Miss Annie Wainman, cousin of the bride, presided at the organ.
The bride, who was given away by her father, looked very charming in her gown of cream crepe with veil and carried a shower bouquet [of] Ophelia roses. Miss Edna Wainman, cousin of the bride, was bridesmaid and she wore a gown of mauve crepe de chine, picture hat and carried roses and sweet peas.
The groom was attended by his brother, Mr. Stanley Mayhew. Little Misses Audrey Wainman and Lura Troke, nieces of the bride, were flower girls. They wore dainty frilly frocks of white voil (sic - s/b voile), little hats with rose buds and carried baskets of pink and white sweet peas. The groom's gift to the bride was a diamond necklet, to the bridesmaid and organist, pearl brooches, the groomsman, cuff links.
Following the ceremony a reception was held at the residence of the bride's parents, where a buffet lunch was served. Mr. and Mrs. Mayhew left for their home in Renfrew. The bride travelled in a tailored suit of navy blue.13

Confusion clarified:
A transcription of a death notice in the Renfrew Mercury of June 20, 1946 from Diane Vermaat reads:
Elkanah Mayhew, son of John Lewis Mayhew and Margaret Jamieson Childerhose, died June 18, 1946, age 84 years.
An In Memoriam notice in the Ottawa Journal of June 20, 1950 shows that it was not Elkanah, but his mother Margaret (Mrs. J L Mayhew) that died on that date.
To add to the confusion, an In Memoriam notice was printed on June 17, 1950, but it erroneously stated "Mr" J L Mayhew rather than "Mrs" J L Mayhew. Several years ago, I had seen this notice without finding the second version. This lead me to attribute June 18, 1946 as the date of death of John Lewis Mayhew, rather than to his wife.
This has caused me confustion for years. I initially thought this was more probably Elkanah's father, John Lewis Mayhew, but I have finally recognized that it was Elkanah's mother who passed away on the date given.26,27,28

I initially thought this was more probably Elkanah's father, John Lewis Mayhew, but I have finally recognized that it was Elkanah's mother who passed away on the date given.25,26,27

I initially thought this was more probably Elkanah's father, John Lewis Mayhew, but I have finally recognized that it was Elkanah's mother who passed away on the date given.28,29,30

The remains arrived in Renfrew per the Winnipeg express at noon on Tuesday and were conveyed to the Thomsonville cemetery for burial. Several of the older residents assembled for the obsequies, among whom members of the Masonic order were conspicuous, the husband in his day having been a leading member of the craft here. Services were conducted by Rev. J. Hay, B.D. Harry J. of Colbourne and William E. of Port Arthur, the two sons were in attendance. Deceased whose maiden name was Annie Armstrong, was 72 years of age.
