The following obituary appeared in the newspaper The Canadian Statesman published in Bowmanville, Ontario 22 February 1945:
Frank L. Squair Prominent Farmer and Ochardist Dies
A resident of Darlington for the past fifty years, Frank L. Squair passed away at the family residence, Lot 7, Con. 3, Darlington, on Feb. 10, 1945. He had been in failing health for the last few years but was confined to bed only about a week.
Mr. Squair was born in the Township of Clarke on the farm now occupied by Mr. George Laing on Mar. 12th, 1860, son of the late Francis Squair and Ann Margach, natives of Scotland.
Deceased was twice married; first to Clara Prout who passed away many years ago. To this union was born one daughter, Mary, now of Deloraine, Manitoba. On Oct. 8, 1889, he married Annie E. Stephens who still survives though in very poor health. To this union were born two sons and one daughter, Kyle and Lawrence of Darlington, and Ruth (Mrs. W. S. Moffat), Orono. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Geo. A. Stephens and four grandsons, John, Grant, Neil and Aleck Moffatt. One brother and three sisters predeceased him, Professor John Squair, Jane, Catherine (Mrs. W. Pollard) and Annie (Mrs. R. Craig).
Deceased was a kindly man and active in every good work for the advancement of the community. He was no partisan but keenly interested in all public issues. He was a regular church attendant as long as his health permitted and a very generous supporter. In his younger days he was an active member of the Orono Sons of Temperance Order and a life-long temperance worker. He was a great reader of both prose and poetry and possessed a remarkable memory. He had lived on the same farm for the past 48 years. A great lover of his home during those years, he had spent very few nights away from home.
He was a great lover of trees and planted a great number of apple trees. He lived to see his orchards bear much fruit. He was an early advocate of reforestry and with his brother, the late Prof. Squair, and Mr. E. J. Zavitz of the Forestry Branch, started a plantation in 1905 which was added to every year for about ten years. At the beginning, many scoffed, at the idea but he lived to see his pine grove a thing of beauty of which he was justly proud. He was very fond of his live stock and until confined to his bed made several trips daily to the barn.
The funeral was held on Feb. 13th in the Morris Chapel and was largely attended. Service was conducted by his pastor, Rev. E. Unstead, assisted by Rev. A. S. Rogers, Toronto, a friend of the family, who gave a comforting message to the bereaved. Pall-bearers were friends of long standing, W. L. Buttery, W. W. Henderson, Wm. Cann, W. G. Werry, F. C. Honey and C. M. Carruthers.
Friends were in attendance from Oshawa, Bowmanville, Orono, Newcastle and the surrounding district.
Those from a distance attending were: Mrs. J. Squair, Mr. E. J. Zavitz, Mr. Harold Hunter, Rev. and Mrs. A. S. Rogers, Toronto; Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Foster, Campbellcroft; Mr. Arthur Runnalls, Port Hope.13
