Robert Moffat1,2,3,4,5,6,7
M, #3044, b. circa 1771, d. before 13 May 1852
Relationship | 2nd great-grandfather of Richard Graeme Moffat |
Last Edited | 21 Jan 2023 |
He was born circa 1771 at Craiglands Village, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, age 80 in the 1851 census, and died at age 82 on his gravestone8,6; or, circa 1770 at Moffat, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, date and location reported by Mary Gow.9; or, circa 1776 at Dumfriesshire, Scotland, age 65 in the 1841 census.7 Robert married Jane Renwick on 14 December 1810 at Moffat, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, some sources give Dec 4, 1810.10,11,12,13,14,15,16,7,17,18,19
Robert Moffat died before 13 May 1852.13
Robert Moffat was buried on 13 May 1852 at Moffat Churchyard, Moffat, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.20 Alternatively, he died on 22 May 1853 at Craigielands Village, Scotland.21,22,23
Robert and Jeen Moffat appeared on the 1841 British Census at Dumfriesshire, Scotland, at Kirkpatrick Juxta Parish, enumerated 6 June 1841, described as a Shop Keeper at Cot on Beatock. Their children Jeen, John and George were listed as living with them.7
Robert and Jean Moffat appeared on the 1851 British Census of Scotland, at Kirkpatrick Juxta Parish, at Craiglands Village, Dumfriesshire, enumerated effective 30 Mar 1851, described as a Sprat Merchant and Grocer, who was still working at the age of 80. Their children Halbert and Jane were listed as living with them. As was his married daughter, Annie Smith.24,6

Extract from a letter from Bill Moffat received Dec 1, 2003:
"... Everything else seemed to be not important after our wonderful trip to Scotland. We come from a beautiful place with people who are both friendly and sometimes stand offish. We spent about 8 days in and around Moffat but did not find out much except we come from either the family at BODEBECK or the one at CRAIGBECK. My bet is on the former. We did confirm Robert & Jean through his gravestone and the 1851 census. when he was 80 so his birthdate is still up in the air 1771 or 1773. Jane age 22 and HALBERT age 35 1816 were in the census too. We could find no record of other children except DAVID on birthstone (sic). Many children were not even registered as it was not compulsory. HALBERT must have been a twin to DAVID."
"We met with Mrs. Margaret Moffat widow of Francis the former chief but she was not very forthcoming with any knowledge she has to have. Robert is listed in the census as a spirit merchant/grocer."26

Aug 27, 2014 note from Erica Johnson, Research Officer at the Dumfries & Galloway Library to Mary-Anne Rayner:
Robert Moffat and Jean Renwick did indeed marry on the 14th December 1810, in Kirkpatrick Juxta Parish, Dumfriesshire. The records from the Old Parish Registers do not include Parents details in Marriage entries.
I searched for Baptism Records for Robert Moffat but unfortunately none was found. His burial record was noted as Robert Moffat in Craigielands Village, buried Moffat Churchyard on the 13th May 1852. But no gravestone was found for him or his wife.
The couple are found in the 1851 Census living at Craiglands Village...
I had better luck with Jean Renwick, who was baptised on the23rd June 1790, daughter of William Renwick and Janet Beattie, in Johnstone Parish Dumfriesshire....
The Renwicks were buried in Wamphray Parish Kirkyard:
"In Memory of William Renwick, died at Cleughbrae 21st March 1827, aged 80 years. Also Jannet Beattie, his spouse died 15th April 1828 aged 78 years."
